Thapae East - live music bar
Tucked along the central stretch of Tha Phae Road, this intimate live music bar draws both locals and travellers into its warm, unpretentious atmosphere. Exposed brick walls and rustic-industrial decor set the tone for evenings built around live performance, with musicians positioned close enough to the crowd that the experience feels genuinely personal rather than like a typical bar show. The venue operates as an open, participatory space — audience members can take the stage to play or sing alongside regular performers, making each night different. Friday nights feature the Chiang Mai Blues band, a reliable draw for anyone interested in the local music scene. The bar keeps things accessible with affordable drinks, though craft beer is not currently on the menu. Quiet nights are handled with the same commitment as busy ones, with music continuing regardless of crowd size. Good to know: Specific opening hours are not listed online, so it is worth checking ahead before making the trip, especially earlier in the evening. The location on Tha Phae Road is central and walkable from most Old City accommodation. Those who prefer an intimate, up-close experience may actually find quieter weeknights more rewarding than the busier weekend crowds.

Visitor Reviews
I had a fantastic evening at Thapae East. The place immediately struck me as warm and authentic: rustic-industrial decor, exposed-brick walls, and a relaxed, unpretentious vibe that felt cozy and welcoming. The live music was the real highlight — talented local (and sometimes international) bands played in a setting intimate enough to make you feel connected to the performance. The crowd was a nice mix of locals, expats and travelers, giving the bar a friendly, inclusive atmosphere. Drinks were reasonably priced and the overall energy was chill yet vibrant. The bar isn’t flashy or overly polished — but that’s part of its charm. If you’re looking for good music, a laid-back crowd and a genuine dive-bar feel in Chiang Mai, Thapae East is a spot I wholeheartedly recommend.
Love this place, been coming here for a few years now and always great experiences. Small and intimate, to the point that you sit just a few feet away from the musicians and get to feel as if you are part of the gig. Drinks are very affordable and there’s no cover charge. Happy hour from 6-8pm and performances usually start at 9pm. Recommend!
The place is a beautiful gem tucked away in the city centre! Open to the public, people can get on stage to play and instrument or sing. The few that I was lucky to see perform left me in awe! Singing the blues, they brought the place to life and had everyone naturally bobbing away! Definitely highly recommended!
Tips for Visiting Nightlife & Bars
Carry Your Passport or a Copy
Clubs and some bars check IDs strictly, especially in Bangkok's Thonglor, RCA, and Sukhumvit areas. A photo of your passport info page on your phone usually works, but carrying a laminated photocopy is safer.
Know the Closing Times
Legal closing time is 2 AM for most venues, though enforcement varies. In Bangkok's designated entertainment zones (RCA, Silom Soi 2/4, Khao San), some clubs stay open until 4 AM. Islands tend to be more relaxed about hours.
Buy Bucket Drinks Cautiously
Island bucket drinks (mixed spirits in a small bucket) are cheap and fun but notoriously strong and inconsistent. Stick to one, stay hydrated, and never leave your drink unattended at beach parties.
