Why go, and how to do it well
Koh Jum is the island for people who found Koh Lanta too busy. It lies between the Krabi mainland and Lanta, about 1,500 people live in its three villages, and the northern hill end is called Koh Pu, so you will see both names. Mains electricity only arrived in 2008, and the pace still reflects it. The west coast is a string of long, quiet beaches backed by around twenty small resorts, most of them wooden bungalows run by local families, and the evenings are a beach restaurant, a sunset and very little else.
That is the point of coming. Days are swimming, reading, a walk to the village on the east side, or a motorbike loop on the island's few roads. Koh Jum is not a day trip; it is somewhere to stay for three nights and find yourself staying five.

Check Island Closures
Similan Islands, Surin Islands, and Koh Tachai close mid-May to mid-October. Some smaller islands reduce ferry service in monsoon season. Always verify schedules before planning your route.
Snorkel Gear Is Cheap to Buy
Rental gear is often scratched and ill-fitting. Buy a decent mask and snorkel at a Big C for 300–500 THB — cheaper than two days of rentals and much more hygienic.
Bring Cash to Smaller Islands
ATMs on smaller islands like Koh Kood, Koh Mak, and Koh Yao charge high fees and sometimes run out of cash. Withdraw enough on the mainland before heading over.
