Mu Ko Surin is a marine national park of five islands in the Andaman Sea near the Myanmar border, north of the better-known Similan Islands and reached by boat from Khuraburi on the Phang Nga coast. The two main islands, Koh Surin Nuea and Koh Surin Tai, are rugged jungle rising from beaches of snow-white sand and water that shifts from jade to turquoise over shallow coral gardens. The snorkeling is the draw: the reefs here sit close to the surface and are the richest in Thailand for anyone without a dive certificate, and Richelieu Rock, the country's best dive site, lies within the park's waters.
Koh Surin Tai is home to a relocated community of Moken, the sea nomads who organized their lives almost entirely at sea before the 2004 tsunami, and a visit to the village is part of most day trips. The only accommodation is the national park's own bungalows and tents on Koh Surin Nuea, booked through the park portal or through agents in Khuraburi, which is also the way to see the beaches after the day boats have gone.
