The Full Moon Party gets all the attention, and it deserves some of it, tens of thousands of people on Haad Rin beach once a month is a spectacle whichever way you feel about it. But treating this island as a party island is a mistake. Most of it is coconut trees, quiet water and roads that lead to waterfalls, and the two versions barely overlap.
My advice is to pick your side before you book. If you want the party, accept that rooms go early and prices climb hard in the days either side of the full moon. If you don't, look at the north and west coasts, where the beaches are calmer, the crowds thinner, and the loudest thing around is usually a beach bar. That's also where the yoga retreats cluster, and the snorkelling is better. The interior is worth a day of your time for the jungle trails if you get restless lying down.
