If you want white sand and clear water without spending a day getting there, this is the one I'd point you at. Roughly three hours from Bangkok by road and ferry, out in the Gulf off Rayong, and compact enough that you can cross from a beach with bars and jet skis to a cove where nothing much happens in a short walk. The reefs sit close enough to shore that snorkelling doesn't need a boat trip, and the swimming is comfortable most of the year.
Weekends and Thai public holidays are when the island fills up, and the busier beaches lose a lot of their charm when that happens. Go midweek if you possibly can. November to April is the dry, calm stretch and the safest bet for anything involving water. Accommodation runs from cheap to considerably less cheap, spread across the different beaches, so pick your beach first and your room second.
