Menam Viewpoint Koh Samui

4.3(36 reviews)

Menam Viewpoint sits along the network of sand and gravel roads that wind through the hilly interior of Koh Samui, rewarding those who make the effort with open views across the Mae Nam coastline and out toward the neighbouring island of Koh Phangan. The viewpoint forms part of a larger web of ridge roads that connect different parts of the island, and adventurous travellers can continue along the route toward Lamai, passing Wat Teepang along the way. The experience here is less about a polished attraction and more about the journey itself. The roads are unmarked, maze-like, and vary considerably in condition, with some sections featuring steep, sandy inclines that can catch drivers off guard. The best views are often found just before the main marker rather than at it, so it pays to stop and look around as you approach. This is not a destination suited to standard rental cars. Visitors are strongly advised to use a 4x4 vehicle, and motorbike riders should be experienced or riding a dirtbike to handle the terrain safely. There are no facilities, opening hours, or entrance fees associated with the site, so come prepared with water and a fully charged phone for navigation. Going early in the day gives the clearest light for views and cooler temperatures for the climb.

Visitor Reviews

There are a number of good view points along the sand gravel roads that cover the centre of Samui.....It's quite a maze... some lead somewhere some don't! Not well marked. Some sections can be very dangerous..never travel without a buddy! The 4 wheel drive Safari Truck companies stop at these view points and other points of interest en route ... Probably the safest way to go... Roads are not good for cars... if one tries on motorbike, use extreme caution as road conditions vary a lot during the year. ...They are not graded often...Dry sandy areas can be more slippery than when it's wet. Some areas have concrete but most don't. On top of Samui, there are many farms growing all kinds of things, from Rubber trees to Durian, Banana and coconut etc..Lots of jungle too ! Carry a jacket in the hills, it can be much cooler than at seas level! Natives are friendly...!! This is not something inexperienced bike riders should try.

Great view point! From Mae Nam side there are several very steep ramps. If you are really (!) adventurous you can continue the "road" (it's not always really a road) towards Lamai and over Wat Teepangkorn (highest peak on Samui). But be careful, and with scooters only do it in dry conditions.

Excellent view of Koh Samui out towards Koh Panyang.

Tips for Visiting Activities & Tours

Vet Elephant Sanctuaries

Only visit sanctuaries that prohibit riding, use no chains or bullhooks, and let elephants roam freely. Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai set the standard. If a place offers painting shows or circus tricks, walk away.

Book Through Klook or GetYourGuide

These platforms offer instant confirmation, free cancellation on most activities, and prices that are often lower than walk-up rates. Compare with local agencies for multi-day trips where negotiation might save more.

Do Outdoor Activities in the Morning

Heat and humidity peak from noon to 3 PM. Schedule jungle treks, cycling tours, and outdoor cooking classes for early morning. Water activities are more flexible since you're in and out of the sea.
