Thailand Mountain Trail
Based on Rachadamnoen Road in central Chiang Mai, Thailand Mountain Trail is a trekking and tour operator specialising in guided hiking experiences through northern Thailand's mountain terrain. Offerings range from single-day hikes — including routes like the Sacred Jungle Trail and the Ancient Opium Route — to multi-day expeditions with homestays in hill tribe villages such as the Lahu communities near Chiang Dao. The company organises group and solo departures, with group sizes kept manageable and supporting guides added when numbers require it. Guides are a consistent highlight across visitor accounts, with staff noted for strong English, genuine local knowledge, and attentive care on the trail. The owner is involved in helping travellers select appropriate routes based on their interests and fitness level, giving the operation a personalised feel. Trails vary in scenery and difficulty, combining forested paths, hillside terrain, and cultural encounters with local communities. Multi-day tours include overnight homestay arrangements, making them a practical choice for travellers wanting an immersive experience beyond Chiang Mai's city centre. Good to know: Chiang Mai's cool season, running from November through February, offers the most comfortable trekking conditions with lower humidity and cooler temperatures. Sturdy hiking shoes, lightweight breathable clothing, and sun protection are recommended regardless of season. No website or listed hours are currently available online, so reaching out directly to confirm availability and book in advance is advisable, particularly during peak tourist season when places on group treks fill quickly.

Visitor Reviews
My husband and I did two fantastic day-hikes with Thailand Mountain Trail - The Sacred Jungle Trail and the Ancient Opium Route. The owner of the company helped us choose these hikes based on our preferences. For the first hike we were a small group of 5. The second hike was just my husband and me. For both hikes, Mit was our very capable and attentive guide, born and raised in the Chiang Mai area. Both hikes were great. Between the two of them we visited temples, waterfalls, and Hmong villages. The trails are technically easy/moderate with a few stamina-challenging areas. You should have previous hiking experience. I found a hiking pole helpful in some spots. We are in our late 50s/early 60s, fit and experienced hikers. We plan to come back in 2028 to do a 2 or 3-day hike with Thailand Mountain Trail!
Just finished the three day trek with TMT as a solo traveler. The overall experience was amazing - from the hikes to the homestays. The hikes were beautiful and varied, in both scenery and difficulty level. You truly get a sense that TMT maintains fair relations with the tribes and the guides had genuine and friendly relationships with the village hosts. And the food was excellent! Most important- Kui and Joe were excellent guides, some of the best I’ve ever had. Kui was able to work in some runs with a group, and others could join as desired. Their knowledge and professionalism and fun-loving nature are second-to-none!
We had a fantastic 3-day trekking tour with Share as our guide. Everything was perfectly organized, and we felt safe and well taken care of throughout the entire trip. Share is an excellent guide - attentive, knowledgeable, and great to spend time with. The two evenings together, especially playing the “Share Game,” made the experience even more special. Thank you for this unforgettable adventure. We highly recommend this tour, especially with Share as a guide.

Tips for Visiting Activities & Tours
Vet Elephant Sanctuaries
Only visit sanctuaries that prohibit riding, use no chains or bullhooks, and let elephants roam freely. Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai set the standard. If a place offers painting shows or circus tricks, walk away.
Book Through Klook or GetYourGuide
These platforms offer instant confirmation, free cancellation on most activities, and prices that are often lower than walk-up rates. Compare with local agencies for multi-day trips where negotiation might save more.
Do Outdoor Activities in the Morning
Heat and humidity peak from noon to 3 PM. Schedule jungle treks, cycling tours, and outdoor cooking classes for early morning. Water activities are more flexible since you're in and out of the sea.
