Samsen Villa
Samsen Villa is a Thai restaurant situated along the Ping River in central Chiang Mai, holding a Michelin recommendation that has brought it considerable attention among visitors to the city. The riverside location adds a calm, pleasant atmosphere, and the menu covers a wide range of Thai dishes drawing on authentic local flavours with generous portion sizes. The dining experience is best described as solid mid-range Thai rather than a fine dining destination. Standout dishes noted by diners include the red snail curry, praised for its depth of flavour. Other dishes, such as the fried squid, have drawn more mixed responses, and several visitors suggest that overall food quality is inconsistent. The restaurant is popular with organised tour groups, which can affect the atmosphere during busier periods, so those seeking a quieter meal may want to plan their visit accordingly. Good to know: The Michelin recognition referenced in the restaurant's reputation dates to 2023, and recent visitor feedback suggests it is best approached as a reliable mid-range dining experience rather than an exceptional one. The restaurant tends to attract large groups, particularly at peak lunch and dinner hours. As opening hours are not listed online, it is worth contacting the restaurant directly before making a special trip, particularly if travelling from outside the central Chiang Mai area.

Visitor Reviews
The food is delicious and full of authentic Thai flavors. Portion sizes are very generous and satisfying. The atmosphere is calm, peaceful, and very pleasant, with a beautiful riverside setting along the Ping River. A great place to enjoy a relaxed and high-quality Thai meal.
Thai restaurant with a wide variety of dishes. Nice riverside atmosphere by the Ping River. A great place to relax and enjoy good food in Chiang Mai.
I had higher expectations for a place that has Michelin star rated plates. I had the red snail curry which was very tasty and flavorful whereas the fried squid was quite chewy and bland. I thought the prices were very high compared to other local restaurants. The service was just ok... not a whole lot of engagement or interaction. One of the benefits was that there was some live music which made the atmosphere a bit better. Overall, it was an ok experience.

Tips for Visiting Activities & Tours
Vet Elephant Sanctuaries
Only visit sanctuaries that prohibit riding, use no chains or bullhooks, and let elephants roam freely. Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai set the standard. If a place offers painting shows or circus tricks, walk away.
Book Through Klook or GetYourGuide
These platforms offer instant confirmation, free cancellation on most activities, and prices that are often lower than walk-up rates. Compare with local agencies for multi-day trips where negotiation might save more.
Do Outdoor Activities in the Morning
Heat and humidity peak from noon to 3 PM. Schedule jungle treks, cycling tours, and outdoor cooking classes for early morning. Water activities are more flexible since you're in and out of the sea.
