Wat Umong
Wat Umong is one of Chiang Mai's most distinctive Buddhist temples, set among forested grounds near the base of Doi Suthep. Built during the reign of King Mangrai, it is best known for its network of underground tunnels — brick passageways housing Buddha images that visitors can walk through — giving it a character quite unlike any other temple in the region. The grounds also house a functioning meditation centre where visitors may sit quietly, and resident monks occasionally hold sessions open to those genuinely seeking practice. The atmosphere here is unhurried and contemplative. Free-roaming chickens and roosters have become an unexpected but beloved feature of the grounds, adding a lived-in warmth to the surroundings. Visitors can explore the forested pathways, the lakeside area, and the striking stupa at their own pace. Those who visit at night report a particularly atmospheric experience, with the lit tunnels contrasting against the dark, quiet grounds. Early morning visits reward travellers with birdsong, rooster calls, and a peaceful start to the day that feels genuinely removed from the city. Good to know: A small entrance fee of 20 Thai Baht applies. Wat Umong sits outside central Chiang Mai in the Suthep area, so private transport or a ride-hailing app is the most practical way to get there. Modest dress is required — shoulders and knees should be covered. If visiting the meditation hall in the meditation centre section, maintain silence and be respectful of those on retreat.

Visitor Reviews
Possibly my favourite temple in chaing mai . It has history and is very different , we arrived to watch the sunrise which was a special experience sharing the morning chorus with all the cockerels , I loved walking the tunnels. There is a lot more to explore for your 20baht entrance , make sure to go feed the fish and watch for turtles. Bring there at 6.30 meant we had the whole place to ourselves before the hoards of tourists arrived making it a very peaceful visit.
Visiting at night was a completely different experience. The stupa and the grounds are mostly dark, which makes the whole place feel very quiet and mysterious. The tunnels, however, are well-lit, creating a really intimate and peaceful atmosphere as you walk through. It was much cooler than the city and a great way to escape the usual crowds. It felt very private and spiritual with the light reflecting off the old brick walls.
Beautiful place, temple and park! Many chickens and chicks, You can go to meditation hall in the meditation center section (building no6)and sit there and meditate. I see some ppl on retreat ( wearing white clothes) There’s small library too, few tea/coffee stalls. Entry to tunnel temple is 20baht, park is pretty big, peaceful and just nice to stay for some time.
Tips for Visiting Wellness & Spas
Learn Wat Pho First
Wat Pho in Bangkok is the birthplace of traditional Thai massage education. Their on-site massage pavilion offers excellent treatments from students and graduates at reasonable prices — and you know the technique is authentic.
Communicate Pressure Preferences
Thai massage can be intense. Say 'bao bao' for lighter pressure or 'nак nак' for harder. A good therapist will check in, but don't hesitate to speak up — suffering in silence defeats the purpose.
Book Longer Sessions
A 60-minute massage is fine, but 90 or 120 minutes allows the therapist to work thoroughly. The price difference is often only 200–400 THB for an extra hour — worth it for a deeper, more relaxing experience.
