White Buddha

4.2(262 reviews)

Set just off a main road in the Thung Yao area outside Pai, this Buddhist temple is home to a striking large white Buddha statue that stands out vividly against the sky and surrounding landscape. The complex also features a dragon bridge — a notable architectural detail that serves as one of the site's main entry points — along with a collection of artistic statues that add character to the grounds. Entry is free, and the atmosphere is calm and unhurried, making it a pleasant stop for those passing through the region. It is worth noting that this site is sometimes confused with Pai's larger "Big Buddha," which is located separately across the river. This is a smaller, distinct temple complex suited to a relaxed visit rather than a major landmark excursion. Visitors can expect a modest, well-maintained site that reflects local Buddhist tradition without the crowds found at more prominent regional temples. The setting is quiet enough to appreciate at a slow pace, and the white statue photographs well against natural light. Good to know: There is no entry fee. Visitors should dress respectfully by covering shoulders and knees, as is standard at Buddhist sites throughout Thailand. No official opening hours are listed, but arriving during daylight hours is advisable. As there is no website, checking with local accommodation or tourism offices in Pai for current access information before visiting is recommended.

Visitor Reviews

White Buddha is a large, pure white statue that stands out beautifully against the sky and surrounding landscape. The atmosphere is peaceful and calm, making it a nice spot to pause during your trip. Highlights • The bright white statue is very photogenic • Quiet and serene surroundings • Open views of the nearby scenery • Not overly crowded compared to major temple sites Recommended Visit Time • Around 15 minutes is usually enough to take photos and enjoy the view Overall White Buddha is a simple but pleasant stop. It doesn’t require much time, but it’s worth visiting as a short scenic and cultural break along your route.

Beautiful white statue of Buddha. Surrounded by other artistic statues. The dragon bridge was also beautiful. You can enter from the dragon bridge, or the path after that.

Just off a main road. There is nothing to rave over from a tourist perspective. However, I am sure they hold ceremonies there. There is a dragon that runs beside the Buddha. There is no entry fee. It's worth a visit if you are passing by.

Tips for Visiting Temples & Culture

Dress Modestly

Cover shoulders and knees at all temples. Carry a light scarf or sarong — some temples lend wraps, but not all. Shoes come off before entering any building with a Buddha image.

Mind Your Feet

Never point your feet at a Buddha image or a monk — it's considered deeply disrespectful. When sitting inside a temple, tuck your feet behind you or to the side.

Ask Before Photographing

Exterior photos are almost always fine, but some interior halls prohibit photography. Look for signs, and never pose irreverently with Buddha images — it's a legal offense in Thailand.
