Visitor Reviews
Overview A high-efficiency local market positioned just outside the old city moat at Chiang Mai Gate. It operates on a dual-cycle model: • Morning (wet market mode): fresh vegetables, herbs, pork, chicken, northern sausages, curry pastes. • Evening (street food mode): transforms into one of the most value-for-money food hubs in the city. This is not a tourist-curated market. It’s authentic, price-sensitive, and built for locals. ⸻ What to Eat (Evening Session – Recommended) 1. Khao Kha Moo (Braised Pork Leg Rice) The most famous stall here. Soft collagen-rich pork, dark soy gravy, pickled greens, boiled egg. Efficient, no-nonsense, high turnover. 2. Sai Ua (Northern Thai Sausage) Smoky, herbal, slightly spicy. Good protein option if you want something less heavy. 3. Fried Chicken + Sticky Rice Crispy outside, juicy inside. Simple execution, strong flavor profile. 4. Khao Soi (Selective stalls) Not every stall is premium quality. If you’re particular about broth depth, choose wisely. ⸻ Price Benchmark • Rice dishes: THB 40–60 • Sausage portion: THB 50–100 • Drinks: THB 10–25 Strong value positioning. Low cost, high flavor density. ⸻ Operational Reality • Seating is basic plastic tables. • No air-conditioning. • Peak hour congestion 6:30–8:30 PM. • Cash dominant. If you expect curated aesthetics, go elsewhere. If you want real northern Thai street economics, this is efficient and satisfying. ⸻ Strategic Recommendation Best time to arrive: before 6:30 PM. Execution plan: Walk the perimeter first, shortlist 2–3 stalls, then commit. This market fits well into an Old City evening walk itinerary — especially after visiting nearby temples or Tha Phae Gate.
Late January 2026 Bustling market near the Southern gate of the Old City which has a rotating morning and night market. Here locals often purchase food supplies in the morning and dine at the adjacent lot the rest of the day. There is a small dry goods and wet market section inside the rooted area as well. Take care entering by foot as this is a heavily congested area .
I visited this market way more times than I’d care to admit. Not massive but has a decent selection of foods from noodles to skewers to buns/gyoza. But imo by far the best part is all the fruit vendors and smoothies. Some vendors charge a lot more so definitely walk around! I had a mango sticky rice daily

Haggle at Markets, Not Malls
Prices at market stalls are negotiable — start at 50–60% of the asking price and meet in the middle. Fixed-price shops and malls don't haggle. Smile and keep it friendly; aggressive bargaining is considered rude.
Arrive Early or Late
Vendors believe the first sale of the day is lucky — you'll often get a better deal if you arrive right when the market opens. Late in the evening, sellers may also discount to avoid packing unsold goods.
Be Cautious with Tailors
Bangkok has excellent tailors, but also many tourist traps. Avoid anyone offering suspiciously cheap suits or who approaches you on the street. Ask your hotel for recommendations, read reviews, and always get two fittings.
