Shark Bay
Shark Bay is a natural beach and snorkeling destination on Koh Samui, drawing visitors with its clear waters, soft corals, and the genuine possibility of encountering sea turtles and small sharks in their natural habitat. Unlike the island's more developed beaches, the bay retains a quieter, more natural character, making it a worthwhile stop for those interested in marine life rather than beach loungers and cocktail bars. Visitors typically arrive as part of an organised snorkeling or diving tour, which is the recommended way to make the most of the underwater scenery. Corals and fish are abundant, and sea turtle sightings are reported regularly. The water clarity can vary depending on weather conditions, with overcast days sometimes bringing murky visibility, so timing matters. Note that the shoreline has coral fragments and rocks near the water's edge, so water shoes are strongly advised to avoid cuts. Good to know: access to the beach currently runs through the Haad Tien resort, which charges an entry fee of around 200 THB per person. This arrangement is a point of frustration for some visitors, as the beach itself is publicly accessible. Booking through a tour operator such as a snorkeling day trip can be a practical way to visit while managing costs and transport. Sunny mornings generally offer the best water visibility and conditions for spotting marine life.

Visitor Reviews
Went on a one-day trip to Shark Bay with Oxygen Tour. Got there around 2 PM — it was drizzling a bit, not much sunlight, and the water was kinda murky. There are lots of soft corals around, which the sea turtles love to eat. I was lucky to see two leatherback turtles! The spot was really nice, but quite crowded.
Great atmosphere and crystal-clear water. Be careful though, there are lots of coral fragments and rocks, I cut my foot here. Snorkeling is not too impressive, but you might get lucky and see a big turtle, which is amazing. The place is quite busy, but food and drinks are available at reasonable prices.
Amazing diving spot with great views. Went here with a snorkeling tour which I would highly recommend. Were able to see many corals, fish and even huge sea turtles!!
Tips for Visiting Beaches & Islands
Check Monsoon Seasons
The Andaman coast (Phuket, Krabi) has rough seas from May to October. The Gulf coast (Koh Samui, Koh Phangan) is roughest from October to December. Plan your island-hopping around these windows.
Snorkel Gear Is Cheap to Buy
Rental gear is often scratched and ill-fitting. Buy a decent mask and snorkel at a Tesco Lotus or Big C for 300–500 THB — cheaper than two days of rentals and much more hygienic.
Book Ferries on 12Go.Asia
The 12Go platform lets you compare ferry operators, times, and prices between islands. Book a day or two ahead in high season. Avoid the cheapest operators if reviews mention safety concerns.
