Ko Samui
Sitting in the Gulf of Thailand, Ko Samui is one of the country's most celebrated islands, drawing visitors with its combination of picturesque white-sand beaches, dense tropical rainforest, and a relaxed yet lively atmosphere. The island balances natural beauty with well-developed tourism infrastructure, offering everything from upscale beachfront hotels to bustling bars and restaurants that line the shore well into the night. Cultural highlights include the iconic Big Buddha Temple, while the surrounding waters provide ample opportunity for boat tours and water-based activities. Visitors consistently describe the island as having a warm, welcoming character with a family-friendly atmosphere alongside its more social beach scene. The beaches are the centrepiece, with golden sands and calm, clear waters, but the island rewards those who venture further inland to explore its forested interior and scenic viewpoints. A wide range of dining and nightlife options keeps the energy lively after dark without overwhelming the overall sense of calm that defines daily life here. Ko Samui is accessible year-round, though the best conditions for beach activities generally fall between December and April, when rainfall is lower and skies are clearer. The island experiences a wet season from October through December, which can bring heavy showers and rougher seas. Travellers planning water activities or boat tours are advised to check seasonal weather conditions before booking, as experiences can vary significantly depending on the time of year.

Tips for Visiting Beaches & Islands
Check Monsoon Seasons
The Andaman coast (Phuket, Krabi) has rough seas from May to October. The Gulf coast (Koh Samui, Koh Phangan) is roughest from October to December. Plan your island-hopping around these windows.
Snorkel Gear Is Cheap to Buy
Rental gear is often scratched and ill-fitting. Buy a decent mask and snorkel at a Tesco Lotus or Big C for 300–500 THB — cheaper than two days of rentals and much more hygienic.
Book Ferries on 12Go.Asia
The 12Go platform lets you compare ferry operators, times, and prices between islands. Book a day or two ahead in high season. Avoid the cheapest operators if reviews mention safety concerns.
