Choeng Mon Beach

4.5(1,309 reviews)

Sitting at the northern tip of Koh Samui, this sheltered beach draws visitors with some of the calmest water on the island — flat enough at times to resemble a lake. A small offshore island shapes both the scenery and the sea conditions, creating a distinctive spot where waves fold in from opposite directions and meet in the middle, a natural curiosity that regularly catches the eye of those wading in or watching from the shore. The surroundings are relaxed and family-friendly, with sunbeds and beanbags available for hire at a modest cost and a strip of bars and restaurants making it easy to settle in for the day. The beach carries a quieter character than Koh Samui's more commercial stretches, though it does draw crowds during peak hours on busy days. Some visitors find it feels more open and expansive than smaller coves on the island, which suits those who prefer space over intimacy. The beach is accessible around the clock, and parking is available nearby for those arriving by vehicle. The dry season from December through April generally brings the most settled conditions, though this also coincides with the highest visitor numbers. Early mornings are consistently the most peaceful time to visit — the light is striking at sunrise, the beach is far less crowded, and the wave phenomenon is easier to appreciate without the midday rush. Those planning to swim or snorkel nearby should note that the area has natural marine ecosystems, making reef-safe sunscreen the considerate choice.

Lovey beach with a lot of bars and restaurants around, you pay a token amount for sun beds or beanbags. There’s a really interesting wave pattern when waves come in from both sides of the small island and cross, this I think may have created the sand bar at the beach. The seabed is mostly smooth sand but watch for occasional rocks. We walked across to the private island about 100M across the water.

Pretty nice beach, located on Koh Samui. The beach is great to sit on for a long time. It's really open, so it doesn't really have that cozy feeling as on, for example, Silver Beach, but still a great beach! Parking was a bit less convenient when I was there; we had to park by the side of the road, but that was not a very big deal as it was quite near the beach, just a short walk away.

Beautiful Beach perfect for quiet sunrises and the sunset is amazing as well. Perfect beach for families, easy parking if your not staying with in walking distance. A must vist while on Koh Samui!

Tips for Visiting Beaches & Islands

Check Monsoon Seasons

The Andaman coast (Phuket, Krabi) has rough seas from May to October. The Gulf coast (Koh Samui, Koh Phangan) is roughest from October to December. Plan your island-hopping around these windows.

Snorkel Gear Is Cheap to Buy

Rental gear is often scratched and ill-fitting. Buy a decent mask and snorkel at a Tesco Lotus or Big C for 300–500 THB — cheaper than two days of rentals and much more hygienic.

Book Ferries on 12Go.Asia

The 12Go platform lets you compare ferry operators, times, and prices between islands. Book a day or two ahead in high season. Avoid the cheapest operators if reviews mention safety concerns.
