Tonsai Elephant Sanctuary Park Patong

4.8(640 reviews)

Situated on Phrabaramee Road in Patong, this sanctuary offers one of Phuket's more meaningful wildlife experiences, centred entirely on the welfare of rescued elephants. Rather than performances or rides, the focus here is on genuine care — elephants are free to roam, play, and behave naturally while guests participate in feeding and bathing activities alongside knowledgeable staff. Visitors consistently note the calm, unhurried atmosphere and the evident health and contentment of the animals. Experiences are hands-on and educational, with staff explaining the elephants' rescue histories and the principles behind ethical sanctuary practices. Small group dynamics keep things personal, and the sanctuary welcomes families, couples, and solo travellers equally. The elephants are described by visitors as gentle and playful, making close interaction feel relaxed rather than staged. Notably, pricing is considered fair compared to similar attractions in the region, and the sanctuary is worth seeking out independently rather than relying on taxi or driver recommendations, which may steer visitors toward pricier alternatives. Good to know: The sanctuary is open every day from 8:30am to 5:00pm, giving good flexibility for scheduling around other Phuket activities. Wear clothes you do not mind getting wet and muddy, as bathing the elephants is part of the experience. Booking in advance through the official website at tonsaielephantphuket.com is recommended to confirm package options and availability before arrival.

Visitor Reviews

Visiting Tonsai Elephant Sanctuary in Phuket was one of the most meaningful experiences of our trip. This is not just an elephant sanctuary – it’s a place filled with genuine compassion, care, and heart. The elephants are clearly loved and respected, with their wellbeing always coming first. There is no riding, no forcing interactions – just learning, observing, and spending time with these beautiful animals in a calm, natural environment. The staff are incredibly knowledgeable and passionate, and you can feel how deeply they care about every animal in their care. What truly touched us was learning that Tonsai doesn’t just care for elephants. They open their hearts to many other animals in need too. We met the sweetest little puppy who tragically lost her parents in the floods a few months ago. Seeing how lovingly she’s been taken in, cared for, and protected was incredibly moving and speaks volumes about the values of this sanctuary. If you are looking for an ethical, responsible, and emotional wildlife experience in Phuket, this is the place. Tonsai Elephant Sanctuary is doing amazing work, and visiting them is supporting something truly special. Highly recommend to anyone who loves animals and wants to make a difference

We (a group of 6) did one hour of feeding + trekking. It is one of the best experiences in Thailand, everyone is so well taken care of - both elephants and us guests. Elephants are so sweet and playful, we got to experience joy of witnessing them being carefree and interacting with us in a very safe and considerate manner. We fed them, walked with them, watched them play in pond. I even high-fived an elephant!! 😂😂😂 At the end, we were offered free snacks and fruit, there is free water and coffee available at all times as well. People working there are super sweet, they encourage you to stand for photos and get the best out of this tour. I would recommend this to everyone, especially families.

I wanted to go to an ethical elephant sanctuary and this place was absolutely amazing. It really gave us a once in a lifetime experience. They were explaining to us how they saved the elephants from different owners who abused them. We went at the elephants pace when walking there was no rushing and whenever the elephant wanted to stop we did. Nothing was forced. Apple followed us and took pictures of us the whole time. It was just something nice that she did for us. 10/10 stars would recommend

Tips for Visiting Activities & Tours

Vet Elephant Sanctuaries

Only visit sanctuaries that prohibit riding, use no chains or bullhooks, and let elephants roam freely. Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai set the standard. If a place offers painting shows or circus tricks, walk away.

Book Through Klook or GetYourGuide

These platforms offer instant confirmation, free cancellation on most activities, and prices that are often lower than walk-up rates. Compare with local agencies for multi-day trips where negotiation might save more.

Do Outdoor Activities in the Morning

Heat and humidity peak from noon to 3 PM. Schedule jungle treks, cycling tours, and outdoor cooking classes for early morning. Water activities are more flexible since you're in and out of the sea.
