The Lake Phuket Elephant Home Ethical Sanctuary
Set in the Thalang district of northern Phuket, this sanctuary stands out for its genuine commitment to ethical elephant care, offering visitors a meaningful alternative to conventional tourist attractions. Elephants roam freely in a natural environment, and the experience centres on education and respectful interaction rather than performance or riding. Guides like Mr. Daeng and Yu are particularly noted by visitors for their deep passion and extensive knowledge of elephant behaviour and welfare. A typical visit includes preparing food and sugar cane for the elephants, hand-feeding them, and learning about their care and conservation. Many programme options also incorporate a cooking component, where guests prepare a meal alongside their guide before sitting down to eat together. The experience is well-suited to families, couples, and solo travellers, and the combination of animal interaction, cooking, and guided learning makes it a full and varied outing rather than a brief encounter. Good to know: The sanctuary operates daily from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and booking in advance through the official website at thelakephuketelephanthome.com is strongly recommended to confirm availability. Wear comfortable, closed-toe shoes suitable for uneven natural terrain, and bring sun protection, as a significant portion of the experience takes place outdoors. Allow extra travel time if coming from central Phuket or the southern beaches, as the sanctuary is located in the north of the island.

Visitor Reviews
Wow, wow, We had an absloute wonderful experience exploring and learnt so much about elephant behaviour, very passionately explained by Mr Daeng. Highly, recommend full day experience. Enjoyed cooking class, made papaya salad from sratch using tradtional pestle & morter method. As a vegetarian, provided an alternative to fish sauce which you don't really need to make a salad. After lunch, we relaxed then went into the forest with Daeng to get food for the elephants. Drove through the forest on a very rough, rugged make shift road. We witnessed chopping of palm trees, very hard work done by Daeng & his team. Unfortunately, the boots were too small for my husband. Suggest, the company to invest in various shoe sizes and shoe cleanser for hgyiene as these are to be worn by different people & to invest in building a proper road. That said, truly unforgettable experience. Getting involved with bathing the elephants is great fun, relaxed. We returned to the elephant santuary to feed the elephants. They certainly devoured nearly all of the palm tree. The staff fetch these tree logs & leaves daily. Suggest the company invest & use automatic chain saw to cut the trees etc. Treasure the memories forever.
Booked this elephant sanctuary experience for our family & we were surprised about how family friendly it is, but also absolutely loved the tour itself. You prepare the sugar canes for the elephants by chopping them up, then do a small hike to where the elephants are in the jungle to feed them. Then they walk back with you to the lake to take baths where you can get in with them & help scrub them down (bring swimsuits! They also have showers here for you after). All of the elephants are rescues. Then you get to make your own papaya salad & enjoy lunch. Would definitely love to come back :)
This is amazing elephant sanctuary in a beautiful area! We had wonderful experience while feeding two female elephants , they were very kind and gentle. Thanks to our guide Yu, he is doing his job 100% excellent! We’ll definitely recommend to visit this place, best memories from the trip! Thanks to all team! P.S. they also offer pick up and drop off services to our hotel included in program price, very convenient!

Tips for Visiting Activities & Tours
Vet Elephant Sanctuaries
Only visit sanctuaries that prohibit riding, use no chains or bullhooks, and let elephants roam freely. Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai set the standard. If a place offers painting shows or circus tricks, walk away.
Book Through Klook or GetYourGuide
These platforms offer instant confirmation, free cancellation on most activities, and prices that are often lower than walk-up rates. Compare with local agencies for multi-day trips where negotiation might save more.
Do Outdoor Activities in the Morning
Heat and humidity peak from noon to 3 PM. Schedule jungle treks, cycling tours, and outdoor cooking classes for early morning. Water activities are more flexible since you're in and out of the sea.
