Blacktip Reef Shark Point

4.5(579 reviews)

Sitting in the waters near Ao Nang, this reef site has built a reputation as one of the more accessible spots in the Krabi region for encountering blacktip reef sharks in the wild. The shallow depth and healthy coral formations make it approachable for snorkellers as well as divers, and the surrounding waters support a wide variety of tropical fish and marine life. Shark sightings are common but not guaranteed — some visitors spot one or two on a single trip, while others come away having enjoyed the reef without a sighting. Multiple dive operators and tour companies run regular boat trips to the site from Ao Nang beach, making it easy to arrange through a local operator. Some visitors also swim out independently from the nearest shore, though this requires awareness of boat traffic and currents. Reviews note that mornings tend to offer calmer conditions and better visibility before boat activity increases. The site can get busy during peak hours, so arriving early improves the experience. The dry season, roughly November through April, brings the most reliable sea conditions and water clarity. During the monsoon months, rougher water and reduced visibility can limit the experience. Reef-safe sunscreen and a rash guard are practical items to bring for extended time in the water. Visitors based near Phi Phi Island can also reach this site easily, as several reviews reference accessing it from Tonsai Pier by longtail boat.

Visitor Reviews

First of all, I’m a big scaredy cat when it comes to the ocean especially when I get further and further away from land. I was shocked by all the reviews of people saying how amazing and fun it was and no one really mentioned anything about it being scary. So this review is really for the ones who are a little apprehensive and don’t know if they can do it. We swam between the beach and shark point about an hour and a half to two hours after high tide so there were some fairly shallow points especially at the rocks. The water was so clear and beautiful especially when the sun came out just for a few minutes. Absolutely beautiful! There were quite a few boats going in between the shore and shark point which made me even more scared but eventually I was able to cross over to the small set of rocks. It was shallow enough most of the way where I could stand if needed. The water got pretty choppy at this point with not only the boats but the weather as well, and I ended up getting slammed into some rocks (my fault for getting too close). But I was really surprised by how beautiful and shallow the water was! We saw so many fish just munching on the rocks and some beautiful butterfly fish. I didn’t see any sharks because I chickened out and left too early, but if the water wasn’t choppy, and the sky was clear, this would be an absolutely gorgeous spot for snorkeling!! Even near the beach there are a lot of coral and sea life to observe! One of the most beautiful snorkeling spots I have ever visited truly.

Remarkable reef and super accessible way to see black tip reef sharks. I usually just swim out from the closest shore. Just mind the current and boats passing by. It’s best to go in the morning to see the sharks, but you probably will if you swim around long enough anytime of the day. I did however encounter a huge swarm of stinging jellyfish when the afternoon tide came in, wouldn’t recommend it. Don’t touch or stand on anything and be respectful to the reef and its inhabitants.

Snorkel with just a mask and see one two peaceful sharks pass by you a bit fast as they move around the sea and underwater caves. Lots of tropical fish you may not see anywhere else. There is a trick to see around a hundred of such fish very close to you at the same time, but I will post it on a YouTube channel though. Unique experience

Tips for Visiting Activities & Tours

Vet Elephant Sanctuaries

Only visit sanctuaries that prohibit riding, use no chains or bullhooks, and let elephants roam freely. Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai set the standard. If a place offers painting shows or circus tricks, walk away.

Book Through Klook or GetYourGuide

These platforms offer instant confirmation, free cancellation on most activities, and prices that are often lower than walk-up rates. Compare with local agencies for multi-day trips where negotiation might save more.

Do Outdoor Activities in the Morning

Heat and humidity peak from noon to 3 PM. Schedule jungle treks, cycling tours, and outdoor cooking classes for early morning. Water activities are more flexible since you're in and out of the sea.
