Baan Mama Elephant
Nestled in the Ko Samrong area of Kanchanaburi, this intimate elephant sanctuary is run by Brigitte, a passionate and knowledgeable host who has dedicated herself to providing a safe haven for elephants rescued from difficult conditions. The sanctuary operates as a non-profit focused on animal welfare, offering visitors genuine, unhurried time with a small number of elephants whose individual histories and personalities are central to the experience. A day at Baan Mama Elephant typically involves feeding, bathing, and walking alongside the elephants in natural surroundings, with Brigitte providing in-depth commentary on elephant behaviour and conservation. The atmosphere is personal rather than commercial, and visitors frequently describe the interactions as deeply moving and unlike anything offered at larger, entertainment-focused venues. The elephants are described as calm and curious, reflecting the care they receive. Good to know: the sanctuary appears to primarily conduct tours in French, which has frustrated some non-French-speaking visitors, so it is strongly advisable to confirm language availability and booking requirements directly before making the trip. Wear comfortable, water-resistant clothing and sturdy footwear suitable for wet and muddy terrain. Kanchanaburi is approximately two to three hours from Bangkok, making this a feasible day trip, though combining it with an overnight stay in the region allows more time to explore the area.

Visitor Reviews
A unique and incredibly close experience with the elephants. I spent the entire day with them. It was a magical and deeply moving exchange. The elephants are calm and genuinely interested in our desire to be with them. They are never forced to do anything. We are simply there to accompany them throughout their day. A truly magical moment! Mama and her team share their daily lives with us with such wonderful kindness and compassion. There's a real sense of love and connection in this place. If you love elephants, I recommend this place 200%. It's not a 5-star hotel, but you know why you're here. A huge thank you to the whole team.
Mama, Brigitte, for those lucky enough to get to know her, is very smart and passionate about elefants. She will tell you everything you want to know about them, and moreover, make you love those beasts. We fed, observed and played with them all they long.. what a treat! They are very well taken care of and the small group approach is really enjoyful. The food is great and we spent real quality time with guests and Brigitte. Thank you for such warm welcome and see you soon!
These elephants are rented from people who treated them badly, to keep them safe, happy and healthy at this sanctuary. I only stepped by with a local thai friend to say hello (i dont think it's an option for tourists), but i really would like the experience to be a volunteer here. Support good people!
Tips for Visiting Activities & Tours
Vet Elephant Sanctuaries
Only visit sanctuaries that prohibit riding, use no chains or bullhooks, and let elephants roam freely. Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai set the standard. If a place offers painting shows or circus tricks, walk away.
Book Through Klook or GetYourGuide
These platforms offer instant confirmation, free cancellation on most activities, and prices that are often lower than walk-up rates. Compare with local agencies for multi-day trips where negotiation might save more.
Do Outdoor Activities in the Morning
Heat and humidity peak from noon to 3 PM. Schedule jungle treks, cycling tours, and outdoor cooking classes for early morning. Water activities are more flexible since you're in and out of the sea.
