Hug Elephant Sanctuary (Office)
Based in central Chiang Mai, Hug Elephant Sanctuary operates as a tour agency connecting visitors with a genuinely ethical elephant experience in the region. The sanctuary's commitment to animal welfare sets it apart from conventional elephant camps, with rescued elephants living in a natural environment where their comfort and natural behaviours come first. The office on Thapae Road Soi 4 serves as the booking and coordination hub for day tours that include hotel pickup and return transfers. Groups are intentionally kept small — often just three to six people — which creates an intimate atmosphere and allows for meaningful time with the elephants. Visitors meet and feed the resident elephants, walk alongside them, and learn about their individual histories and needs from knowledgeable guides. The experience is largely outdoors and unhurried, with guides praised by visitors for being personable, informative, and attentive throughout the day. Booking in advance is strongly recommended, particularly during the peak season from November to February when Chiang Mai's cooler, drier weather draws larger visitor numbers. Tours typically include hotel pickup, so confirming logistics directly with the sanctuary ahead of time is worthwhile. Comfortable clothing and closed-toe shoes are advisable, as the day involves walking on natural terrain. Visitor Reviews
My wife and I had a wonderful time on our Hug Elephant Sanctuary visit even after there were a few challenges getting started. No driver showed up in the morning, and when we called we were told they didn't have any tours scheduled that day. Our proof of confirmation email said otherwise and we, indeed scheduled the tour. Despite the mix up, the company quickly sent a driver to pick us up from the hotel and made things right with a private tour. We lost a little bit of time overall from this, but once we got there, our tour guide, Kevin, completely made up for it and we had an incredible experience. Kevin was very kind throughout the day, passionate about teaching us everything we wanted to know about the elephants, and went above and beyond by taking a ton of pictures for us we didn't even know we would want until the day was over. We will forever cherish those photos. Kevin even went out of his way, to hand make a flower crown for me to give to my wife for some really awesome pictures. Kevin, if you are reading this we want to THANK YOU AGAIN! You're the man. You made the day unforgettable. We would overall highly recommend the Hug Elephant Sanctuary.
Top notch experience! We were picked up from the hotel lobby early in the morning for the full day tour. Upon arrival we were greeted with our guide Kevin who was knowledgeable and fun. We met Hug Kuhn the newest baby elephant at the sanctuary (SO CUTE). It was clear that the team cared for and provided a safe environment for the animals. Our mud bath experience ran short because they did not want to push the elephants to get into the water when it’s cold. I swam at the waterfall and YES it was very cold. The healthy Thai Lunch consisted of yellow curry with chicken and veggies (really good after some short hiking). I felt like I had sufficient time to bond with the mama and feed her closely. Super fun highly recommend the full day tour.
What an experience! The small group sizes really let you enjoy your time with the elephants and makes the whole experience feel more personal (only 6 in our group). We started off by meeting all 4 elephants including the little baby elephant. We then followed the 2 elephants through the hilly jungle trail to the river where we fed them and washed them in the river. Once back to the main area we sat down for a home cooked meal that was fantastic. When we were done eating we got to hangout with the mom and baby elephant a little longer before heading back to town. You can tell the elephants are really looked after and care for. I Highly recommend this tour.
Tips for Visiting Activities & Tours
Vet Elephant Sanctuaries
Only visit sanctuaries that prohibit riding, use no chains or bullhooks, and let elephants roam freely. Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai set the standard. If a place offers painting shows or circus tricks, walk away.
Book Through Klook or GetYourGuide
These platforms offer instant confirmation, free cancellation on most activities, and prices that are often lower than walk-up rates. Compare with local agencies for multi-day trips where negotiation might save more.
Do Outdoor Activities in the Morning
Heat and humidity peak from noon to 3 PM. Schedule jungle treks, cycling tours, and outdoor cooking classes for early morning. Water activities are more flexible since you're in and out of the sea.
