Huai Tueng Thao
Huai Tueng Thao is a lakeside recreational area set among the hills of Mae Rim District, roughly a short drive north of Chiang Mai city. The centrepiece is a large reservoir ringed by mountain views, and the atmosphere is decidedly unhurried — a local favourite for weekends away from the city's bustle. Floating bamboo huts extend over the water, offering a distinctive setting for a relaxed meal with panoramic mountain backdrops. Food portions are reported as generous and reasonably priced, making a long, leisurely lunch a highlight of the visit. Beyond the lake itself, the surrounding area includes a park where visitors can walk trails and encounter animals, with some reportedly allowing close interaction. The combination of lake, greenery, and open space makes it well suited to families, groups of friends, and anyone looking for a half-day or full-day outdoor escape without strenuous activity. Good to know: Water quality at the reservoir has drawn some criticism in recent reviews, so visitors who were hoping to swim may want to temper expectations on that front. The floating huts and lakeside food stalls are the main draw, so arriving with an appetite is worthwhile. As opening hours and facility details are not consistently posted, it is advisable to check current conditions with your hotel or a local tour operator before making the trip. Private vehicle or a hired driver is the most practical way to reach the site.

Visitor Reviews
Came here yesterday.. we ate on the raft then took a short drive to the large park where the animals were. Some of them allow you to climb on top. Very laid back, relaxing place. Best thing is that there were very few tourists.. it's a fun place to go to if you want to escap the crowds. Lots of friendly dogs in the park also
So chill and breezy with very good food. Price is reasonable and big portion. The view is something extra. Love to spend times during weekends with friends and family.

Tips for Visiting Activities & Tours
Vet Elephant Sanctuaries
Only visit sanctuaries that prohibit riding, use no chains or bullhooks, and let elephants roam freely. Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai set the standard. If a place offers painting shows or circus tricks, walk away.
Book Through Klook or GetYourGuide
These platforms offer instant confirmation, free cancellation on most activities, and prices that are often lower than walk-up rates. Compare with local agencies for multi-day trips where negotiation might save more.
Do Outdoor Activities in the Morning
Heat and humidity peak from noon to 3 PM. Schedule jungle treks, cycling tours, and outdoor cooking classes for early morning. Water activities are more flexible since you're in and out of the sea.
