Maliwan Thai Cooking Class

5.0(248 reviews)

Maliwan Thai Cooking Class offers an immersive culinary experience in Bangkok's historic Phra Nakhon district, where participants learn to prepare authentic Thai dishes from scratch in a hands-on, small-group setting. What sets the experience apart is the tuk-tuk ride to a local market at the start of each session, where the instructor guides guests through selecting fresh ingredients and explains their role in Thai cooking — a practical introduction to the cuisine that goes well beyond the kitchen. During the cooking portion, participants typically work through several dishes, with past guests noting green Thai curry, pad thai, and soup among those covered. The instructor — known for being knowledgeable, warm, and entertaining — walks everyone through technique, flavor balance, and cultural context, making the class engaging for solo travelers, couples, and families alike. Children have participated successfully, and the relaxed atmosphere accommodates all experience levels. Classes run daily from 8:30 AM to 7:00 PM, giving travelers flexibility when planning their Bangkok itinerary. Booking in advance through the Maliwan website is strongly recommended, as sessions fill quickly during peak travel periods. Comfortable, closed-toe shoes are advisable, as the class involves time on your feet both at the market and in the kitchen.

It was one of my favorite things I did in Bangkok. The teacher is so knowledgeable, helpful, and so Funny! It was such a great time. I learned so much about Thai culture when we went to the market. She introduced me to those working at the market and explained about their lives and work. She explained so much about the plethora of produce, meat, fruits, and animals for sale. She is such a knowledgeable cook as well. I could go on and on about how amazing this was. I really suprised myself with the dishes I made. I highly recommend it.

Absolutely amazing. If you come to Bangkok you must do this. The instructor was super friendly and explained everything perfectly. The market tour was wonderful. I really enjoyed learning about all of the fish and produce that is used in Thai cooking. Then you go back to the kitchen and cook all of the recipes. She makes it super easy and fun to follow along. The food turned out wonderful. This was definitely a master class on Thai cooking.

Absolutely amazing experience at the Maliwan Cooking School at the end of January. We started the day with a tuk-tuk ride to the local market to buy fresh ingredients, which was both fun and informative. We then cooked four incredible Thai dishes. Mae is an outstanding chef and a fantastic teacher - we learned so much from her. She shared great insights both at the market and in the kitchen, making the whole experience unforgettable.

Tips for Visiting Activities & Tours

Vet Elephant Sanctuaries

Only visit sanctuaries that prohibit riding, use no chains or bullhooks, and let elephants roam freely. Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai set the standard. If a place offers painting shows or circus tricks, walk away.

Book Through Klook or GetYourGuide

These platforms offer instant confirmation, free cancellation on most activities, and prices that are often lower than walk-up rates. Compare with local agencies for multi-day trips where negotiation might save more.

Do Outdoor Activities in the Morning

Heat and humidity peak from noon to 3 PM. Schedule jungle treks, cycling tours, and outdoor cooking classes for early morning. Water activities are more flexible since you're in and out of the sea.
