Bangkok Butterfly Garden and Insectarium
Tucked within the green expanse of Rot Fai Park (Chatuchak Railway Park) in northern Bangkok, this butterfly garden and insectarium offers a genuinely immersive encounter with live butterflies and insects in a landscaped outdoor setting. Unlike zoo-style enclosures, the garden is designed so butterflies fly freely around visitors, creating an up-close experience that appeals to families, nature lovers, and photographers alike. Information boards throughout the space provide educational context on species and ecosystems, making it as informative as it is visually engaging. The sanctuary itself is thoughtfully laid out, with a looping path that incorporates varied levels of vegetation, giving visitors a sense of moving through a natural habitat rather than a static display. The surrounding park adds considerable value to a visit — many visitors combine the insectarium with a leisurely walk through Rot Fai Park's wider grounds, easily filling two hours or more. The setting offers a noticeably quieter and more relaxed atmosphere compared to Bangkok's central tourist attractions. Good to know: The garden is located inside Rot Fai Park on Kamphaeng Phet 3 Road in Chatuchak, accessible via the MRT Chatuchak Park or Kamphaeng Phet stations. Opening hours are not reliably listed online, so it is worth verifying current times before making the trip. Lightweight, breathable clothing is recommended, as much of the experience takes place outdoors. Visiting on a weekday morning tends to mean fewer crowds and more active butterfly movement in cooler temperatures.

Visitor Reviews
A wonderful weekend stop for anyone who loves butterflies. Located inside Rot Fai Park, the insectarium is well-designed with clear information boards, lush plants, and plenty of butterflies flying freely around. It’s meant to be a calm, peaceful space where you can slow down and appreciate how delicate these creatures are. However, I did feel a bit sorry for the butterflies during my visit. Even though visitors are supposed to keep quiet, there were many kids running, shouting, and chasing the butterflies. It disturbed the atmosphere and clearly stressed the butterflies. I really hope parents help keep things calm so everyone — and the butterflies — can enjoy the space. Aside from that, the insectarium is clean, well-maintained, and great for learning. It’s definitely worth a visit if you’re already spending time in Rot Fai Park.
Today I visited the Bangkok Butterfly Garden and Insectarium, and it was a refreshing and peaceful experience. The garden is beautifully maintained, with a wide variety of butterflies flying freely in the large dome-shaped enclosure. Walking inside feels like stepping into a colorful, natural wonderland. There are also informative displays about different species of butterflies and insects, making it both enjoyable and educational. The surrounding park area adds to the calm atmosphere, perfect for a relaxing stroll. It wasn’t very crowded, which made the visit even more pleasant. Overall, it’s a lovely spot to spend an hour or two, especially for nature lovers, families, or anyone looking for a quiet break in Bangkok. 🦋✨
Incredible butterflies of all shapes, colors, and sizes SURROUNDING YOU IN THEIR FLUTTER!!!!!!! 🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋 Visiting this butterfly garden is a must-do activity when in Bangkok, I can't believe we stumbled upon it by accident. We spent hours here! No crowd at all. Very well designed garden with water features and multiple levels to walk around. Garden caretakers do a meticulous job tending the plants. No tickets necessary, the garden is free, simply fill out the survey when you arrive.
Tips for Visiting Activities & Tours
Vet Elephant Sanctuaries
Only visit sanctuaries that prohibit riding, use no chains or bullhooks, and let elephants roam freely. Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai set the standard. If a place offers painting shows or circus tricks, walk away.
Book Through Klook or GetYourGuide
These platforms offer instant confirmation, free cancellation on most activities, and prices that are often lower than walk-up rates. Compare with local agencies for multi-day trips where negotiation might save more.
Do Outdoor Activities in the Morning
Heat and humidity peak from noon to 3 PM. Schedule jungle treks, cycling tours, and outdoor cooking classes for early morning. Water activities are more flexible since you're in and out of the sea.
