Pa Pae Meditation Retreat
Nestled in the forested hills of Pa Pae in Mae Taeng district, this international Buddhist meditation retreat draws visitors from around the world seeking genuine practice in a natural, undisturbed setting. The retreat specialises in vipassana and traditional Buddhist meditation, with Western monks among the teachers — an unusual combination that makes the teachings particularly accessible to international guests. Repeat visitors are common, with some returning multiple times within weeks, and longer stays of a month or more are possible for those wishing to deepen their practice. The atmosphere is calm and deliberately simple, with daily chanting sessions, guided meditation, and the freedom to sit independently in the surrounding forest. The mountain environment — cool air, birdsong, and little distraction — reinforces the contemplative experience. Structured programmes are available for newcomers, while experienced practitioners can settle into their own rhythm. The community is international and welcoming, and visitors note the retreat's resident dogs as an unexpectedly endearing feature of daily life here. Good to know: The retreat operates on a dana (donation) model typical of traditional Buddhist centres, and structured programmes run on set schedules, so contacting the retreat in advance is strongly recommended before arrival. Modest clothing is expected, and visitors should be prepared to set aside devices and digital distractions. The cooler mountain climate means layers are useful, especially during morning and evening sessions. The dry season from November to February offers the most comfortable conditions for an extended stay.

Visitor Reviews
Honestly for me, it was an amazing experience. I did the structured three day retreat in end January and ended up staying a few more days after. I didn’t have too high expectations before coming and if you are thinking of joining, I definitely think you need to be in the right mindset otherwise it will not serve you any purpose. If you want to learn how to meditate while being a relaxed nature environment this is the place for you. It is super beginner friendly, I was thinking of doing a Vipassana silent meditation 10 days before, but I think this is a very good introduction to meditation with some luxuries before something as intense as Vipasana. Papae has everything you need if you want the little luxuries of nice coffee, 2 massage places, there is also a convenience store and restaurant if you do want to have dinners. The food included the canteen is decent (some days amazing and some days okay), but honestly, the greatest thing for me was the wisdom shared by some of the monks which I really resonated with, the kindness of the people and other participants here and just overall positive chill environment, where you can truly come to reset yourself and think or be alone if you want to. Beware that yes you are in nature so there will be bugs in some places, it could be you don’t have hot water, you have to wake up early and remain silent on certain times, it might get very cold, very hot or rainy depending when you are here, but apart from that it is a great experience! Ps: for those who might already be very experienced meditators or true Buddhists I think it might not be the best place as they do cater to mostly beginner western people :)
Been there three times now within two months that explains how much I’m obsessed with this retreat. I’ve been to many vipassana meditation centers in the past in Myanmar, but this one is spectacular, and exceeded my expectations. I love the weather, nature, vibe, people in general, dogs, massage, the flexibility, and so forth. Most days i meditate up to 5 one-hour sessions. Here’s my recommendation according to my personal experience Treehouses - Sunrise time Moon hall - during the day (cos it’s cool and breezy there in the shades) Center hall - at night Sunset hall - in the afternoon until sunset Food is not the best and hot shower is very limited, and sometimes it’s not easy to get accommodation due to high volume participants. But that still did not impact my peace and joy. Thank you so so much Pa Pae. I’ve been wanting to transform myself for so long. And the ambiance they offer fit exactly what i’ve just needed. 🙏🏻
Coming to Pa Pae genuinely changed my life and how I will continue to live. The teachings from the monks have been so helpful to the way I allow things in life to affect me. It’s so easy to find peace in this beautiful retreat, as well as lovely people to connect with. I found the 3 day structure retreat to be very helpful as a beginner meditator. It taught us Buddhist principles, meditation techniques, and monk’s life stories that were inspiring. I kept extending my stay because, well… why wouldn’t you!!!!! Pa Pae has by far been the most monumental part of my trip to Thailand. Thank you immensely🤍
Tips for Visiting Wellness & Spas
Learn Wat Pho First
Wat Pho in Bangkok is the birthplace of traditional Thai massage education. Their on-site massage pavilion offers excellent treatments from students and graduates at reasonable prices — and you know the technique is authentic.
Communicate Pressure Preferences
Thai massage can be intense. Say 'bao bao' for lighter pressure or 'nак nак' for harder. A good therapist will check in, but don't hesitate to speak up — suffering in silence defeats the purpose.
Book Longer Sessions
A 60-minute massage is fine, but 90 or 120 minutes allows the therapist to work thoroughly. The price difference is often only 200–400 THB for an extra hour — worth it for a deeper, more relaxing experience.
