Mala Dhara
Tucked into the lush countryside of Doi Saket, roughly 30 kilometres northeast of central Chiang Mai, Mala Dhara is an eco-resort and wellness retreat that combines accommodation, yoga, and plant-based dining in a distinctly rustic natural setting. The property draws retreat groups, solo travellers, and wellness seekers looking to step away from city noise into something quieter and more intentional. Guests consistently highlight the serene atmosphere, the quality of the yoga classes, and the vegan food, which receives particularly strong praise. The resort features charming hobbit-style rooms, a pool, open-air spaces for yoga practice, and a coffee and candle shop with a relaxed, unhurried feel. The owner and staff are frequently mentioned by name in reviews as warm and genuinely welcoming. The property also hosts organised retreats, making it a viable base for group bookings as well as independent stays. On the practical side, note that yoga equipment on site has received mixed feedback from retreat hosts, so those leading groups may want to confirm the condition of facilities or arrange to bring their own mats. Mala Dhara is located in Tambon Mae Pong and is not easily walkable from central Chiang Mai, so arranging your own transport — whether a rental vehicle, taxi, or transfer through the resort — is advisable. The cooler months between November and February offer the most comfortable conditions for outdoor yoga and exploring the surrounding countryside.

A Hidden Gem in Doi Saket – Mala Dhara Eco Resort My stay at Mala Dhara was nothing short of magical. Nestled in the lush countryside of Doi Saket, this eco-resort is the perfect blend of rustic charm, comfort, and sustainability. From the moment I arrived, I felt an overwhelming sense of peace. The natural surroundings, organic gardens, and thoughtfully designed villas made it a truly immersive experience. The staff were incredibly welcoming and went above and beyond to make sure every detail was taken care of. The accommodations are earthy yet luxurious—each villa uniquely styled with natural materials, outdoor showers, and beautiful views of the rice fields and mountains. One of the highlights was the plant-based cuisine—fresh, flavorful, and made with love. The yoga shala and saltwater pool added to the wellness vibe, making it easy to disconnect and recharge. If you're looking for a peaceful escape, a place to reconnect with nature, or even host a retreat, Mala Dhara is a dream. I can't wait to return.
Mala Dhara is a rustic, natural feeling heaven. They just opened up a coffee and candle shop that has such a special, chill vibe. There is space for yoga practice and soaking in nature. The pool is delightful and the rooms are lovely. It is an Eco resort so I’m happy for the rooms not to be cleaned daily. The vegan food is so delicious and the family that runs the resort are so sweet. I have returned many times and will be back again!!!!!
I went on a New Years retreat here and I couldn’t imagine a better location for a retreat. The feeling of running away from all the city noise. Beautiful resort with lovely staff. Ploy who owns the place is the coolest person, so inspiring. Oh, and the food…. Still dreaming of it. Will definatelly be back again🎉🎉
Tips for Visiting Wellness & Spas
Learn Wat Pho First
Wat Pho in Bangkok is the birthplace of traditional Thai massage education. Their on-site massage pavilion offers excellent treatments from students and graduates at reasonable prices — and you know the technique is authentic.
Communicate Pressure Preferences
Thai massage can be intense. Say 'bao bao' for lighter pressure or 'nак nак' for harder. A good therapist will check in, but don't hesitate to speak up — suffering in silence defeats the purpose.
Book Longer Sessions
A 60-minute massage is fine, but 90 or 120 minutes allows the therapist to work thoroughly. The price difference is often only 200–400 THB for an extra hour — worth it for a deeper, more relaxing experience.
