Ko Yao Yai

4.6(437 reviews)

Ko Yao Yai is a large inhabited island sitting in the Phang Nga Bay between Phuket and Krabi, part of the Ko Yao Archipelago. Unlike its more commercialised neighbours, the island has retained a relaxed, unhurried character that appeals to travellers seeking somewhere genuinely off the beaten path. Traditional Muslim fishing villages, rubber plantations, and forested hills define the landscape, while its coastline offers calm beaches and access to popular dive and snorkel sites in the surrounding waters. Visitors can expect a pace of life that is slow by design. Activities include snorkelling, jet skiing, and boat trips to nearby islands including the famous James Bond Island. Renting a scooter and riding the length of the island is a popular way to take in the panoramic views, though roads are narrow and require careful, unhurried driving. Note that swimming conditions at some beaches, such as Lo Pared, can be affected by tides and seasonal conditions, so it is worth checking locally before heading in. Accommodation on Ko Yao Yai skews toward small resorts rather than budget guesthouses, and prices can be higher than expected even during low season. Travellers on tighter budgets should compare options and book ahead. The island is best suited to those who prioritise quiet over convenience and are comfortable with limited infrastructure in exchange for a less crowded, more natural experience.

Visitor Reviews

Ideal for those looking for peace and quiet. Activities, jet skiing, snorkelling, boat trips to nearby islands and James Bond islands. There are times when it's almost impossible to swim at Lo Pared beach because it's filled with thousands of tiny jellyfish that sting your whole body, making it uncomfortable to be in the water, especially in January and February. The best beach for swimming, snorkelling and monkey watching at the end of the day is Au Moang beach in the south of the island... superb. In the north of the island, because the beaches are almost all mangroves, it's almost impossible to swim, and there's the needle fish that's buried in the ground and when it stings, you get really sick for a few weeks. To swim in the north of the island you have to go to Sandbank beach and swim in the direction of Koh Yao Noi, the neighbouring island to Koh Yao Yai. You can see that the corals on the beaches are being destroyed by the mooring of all kinds of boats. Devastating for public health and the environment is that the population burns plastics mixed with coconuts, herbs and leaves, making the island's air saturated and foul-smelling. Relatively cheap island in general, friendly and pleasant people, good hotels and restaurants, good regional sweets. Before we only saw motorbikes, today we are invaded by cars and jeeps driving along these roads with poor infrastructure. If you're looking for a cure for your bones, rheumatism, blood circulation and other ailments, you should visit Dr Saad, an old, half-blind man who works small or large miracles on your body with an ancient Thai massage called "haille"... I recommend it. I really like this island and the people.

Fantastic place. Go if you like secluded less touristy offbeat places . And go if you know how to ride a scooty. A scooty ride across the length of the island is a must . The views are amazing, great beaches , lovely sunrise and sunsets . Some places has alcohol, some simple restaurants that’s it.

When we entered the island our guide said welcome to paradise and I think that's the best way to describe it. It's a perfect place to rest and swim. There's a bar you can buy a drink, they're toilets and showers. I really enjoyed my visit.

Tips for Visiting Beaches & Islands

Check Monsoon Seasons

The Andaman coast (Phuket, Krabi) has rough seas from May to October. The Gulf coast (Koh Samui, Koh Phangan) is roughest from October to December. Plan your island-hopping around these windows.

Snorkel Gear Is Cheap to Buy

Rental gear is often scratched and ill-fitting. Buy a decent mask and snorkel at a Tesco Lotus or Big C for 300–500 THB — cheaper than two days of rentals and much more hygienic.

Book Ferries on 12Go.Asia

The 12Go platform lets you compare ferry operators, times, and prices between islands. Book a day or two ahead in high season. Avoid the cheapest operators if reviews mention safety concerns.
