Wat Lamai
Tucked into the heart of Lamai on Koh Samui, Wat Lamai is a working Buddhist temple that offers a genuine slice of local religious life away from the island's more tourist-heavy attractions. The temple grounds are home to a notable collection of statues, including distinctive figures of riders that set it apart visually from more conventional temple sites. Its central location makes it easy to reach, whether on foot or by scooter, and the well-maintained grounds reflect the care of the local community that worships here. Visitors describe the atmosphere as calm and reflective, making it a worthwhile stop for those seeking a quieter cultural experience. The resident temple dogs are reportedly accustomed to visitors, adding a relaxed, lived-in character to the site. Unlike some of Koh Samui's more heavily promoted temples, Wat Lamai draws a smaller crowd, which contributes to its unhurried, meditative feel. As with all Buddhist temples in Thailand, visitors should dress respectfully before entering — this means covering shoulders and knees. Lightweight, loose-fitting clothing that meets these requirements is ideal given the tropical climate. Arriving in the morning tends to offer a cooler and quieter experience, and it is worth being mindful that this is an active place of worship, so quiet and respectful behaviour is appreciated throughout the grounds.

Tips for Visiting Temples & Culture
Dress Modestly
Cover shoulders and knees at all temples. Carry a light scarf or sarong — some temples lend wraps, but not all. Shoes come off before entering any building with a Buddha image.
Mind Your Feet
Never point your feet at a Buddha image or a monk — it's considered deeply disrespectful. When sitting inside a temple, tuck your feet behind you or to the side.
Ask Before Photographing
Exterior photos are almost always fine, but some interior halls prohibit photography. Look for signs, and never pose irreverently with Buddha images — it's a legal offense in Thailand.
