Wat Khao Thong Muang Lab Lae

4.5(54 reviews)

Wat Khao Thong Muang Lab Lae is a long-established Buddhist temple situated along the Kanchanaburi bypass road, connecting to Saeng Chuto Road near Wang Sraphee intersection. Despite its somewhat mysterious-sounding name, the temple is a welcoming and accessible place of worship that has served the local community for generations, sitting a short distance from Kanchanaburi city centre. The temple is currently in an active period of development, with construction underway on a new pavilion and crematorium. Visitors can expect a spacious and well-maintained grounds with a calm, shaded atmosphere well-suited to quiet reflection. The resident abbot is held in high regard by the local community, and the temple draws steady numbers of worshippers, particularly on Buddhist holy days. On occasions such as Asalha Puja Day, the grounds accommodate large gatherings comfortably thanks to the generous size of the main hall. As a functioning place of worship rather than a tourist landmark, visitors are encouraged to dress modestly, covering shoulders and knees, and to be mindful of ongoing religious activities. The temple is most animated during Thai Buddhist holidays when locals gather for merit-making ceremonies, making those dates a meaningful time to visit for those interested in experiencing authentic local religious life. Current opening hours are not publicly listed, so checking the temple's Facebook page at facebook.com/watkhotong before visiting is advisable.

Visitor Reviews

The word "Muang Lab Lae" sounds mysterious when you hear it. Every time I pass Wat Khao Tong, I am reminded of a time in 1990-1991 when a grandmother used to go there to ask for lottery numbers. She was a public health worker and she told me about it. I heard that this temple is an ancient and secret city. Behind it, there's a door that transcends realms, invisible to ordinary people. Long ago, when my grandmother was little, a family came to pay respects to the Buddha. After paying their respects, they walked around the temple grounds. My father wandered around, while my mother, holding her child, looked behind her. When she turned around, her husband was missing. She searched for him but couldn't find him. She called the temple staff for help, but they couldn't find him. It was already late in the evening. The woman hurriedly brought her child back because nighttime would be difficult. Back then, there was no electricity, but she told the temple staff that if her husband came back, they'd stay at the temple first. They understood that he might have wandered into the forest because there were mountains behind him. Years passed, and there was no news. One day, an old woman and her son had grown into young men. One day, a young man came to her house, asking for her and her child. They looked very familiar, and after talking, they learned that the young man was her husband, who had been missing for nearly 30 years. He told me that he walked to the back and found an old town. He turned back and didn't see his wife and child, and lived there for months. However, after decades outside, he returned young. Every time I pass this temple, I think of the stories I have heard, even though I have never personally experienced them.

It is a temple that has been with the city for a long time, not far from Kanchanaburi city. It has been in existence from the past to the present. The temple is cool and suitable for making merit during holidays with family. If you are free from work, you can stop by and make merit on your day off.

The abbot is very respectable, the temple is beautiful, and they are currently building a pavilion and a crematorium. It's a great place to make merit.

Tips for Visiting Temples & Culture

Dress Modestly

Cover shoulders and knees at all temples. Carry a light scarf or sarong — some temples lend wraps, but not all. Shoes come off before entering any building with a Buddha image.

Mind Your Feet

Never point your feet at a Buddha image or a monk — it's considered deeply disrespectful. When sitting inside a temple, tuck your feet behind you or to the side.

Ask Before Photographing

Exterior photos are almost always fine, but some interior halls prohibit photography. Look for signs, and never pose irreverently with Buddha images — it's a legal offense in Thailand.
