Wat Phra That Doi Suthep

4.7(11,498 reviews)

Perched at 1,073 metres on Doi Suthep mountain, roughly 9 kilometres from Chiang Mai's old city, this revered Buddhist temple is one of northern Thailand's most significant religious sites. Said to enshrine relics of the Buddha, it holds deep spiritual meaning for Thai Buddhists and draws pilgrims and visitors alike throughout the year. The centrepiece is a gleaming golden chedi surrounded by smaller pagodas, ceremonial bells, and intricate temple architecture that rewards close inspection. The approach to the temple is an experience in itself. A grand staircase of nearly 300 steps rises to the main complex, flanked on both sides by elaborately decorated naga serpent sculptures. Those who prefer not to climb can take a funicular to the top. Once inside, the atmosphere is calm and contemplative, with the scent of incense, the sound of monks chanting, and panoramic views over Chiang Mai below. Early morning visits offer a quieter experience and the chance to witness the sunrise over the city. The temple is open daily from 5:00 am to 9:00 pm, making early arrival a practical option for those wanting to avoid midday crowds. As an active place of worship, modest dress is required — shoulders and knees should be covered, and shoes must be removed before entering the main buildings. Sarongs are typically available to borrow at the entrance if needed. Entrance fees apply for foreign visitors.

Visitor Reviews

am always happy to have the opportunity to pay homage to the Buddha's relics at this sacred place. Every time I visit, I feel energized and peaceful in my life. I intend to visit every year. The atmosphere is especially wonderful during the winter months. I recommend arriving early in the morning to avoid crowds. There is convenient parking nearby, just one street away. The history of Wat Phra That Doi Suthep Ratchaworawihan dates back to 1927 during the reign of King Kue Na of Lanna. The Buddha's relics were brought from Si Satchanalai, and a sacred elephant was used to determine the location for their enshrinement. The elephant stopped at the summit of Doi Suthep, leading to the construction of a Mon-style pagoda to house the relics. Later, renovations and additional structures were built around the pagoda. Kruba Sriwichai also built a road up the mountain, making it easier for people to visit. Currently, it is the sacred pagoda associated with those born in the Year of the Goat.

Wat Phra That Doi Suthep is truly unforgettable. From the moment you begin the ascent up the mountain, there’s a sense that you’re heading somewhere special. The temple itself is breathtaking — the golden chedi gleams brilliantly against the sky, radiating both beauty and serenity. The atmosphere is peaceful yet deeply spiritual. The soft sound of bells, the scent of incense, and the quiet prayers of visitors create an experience that feels both calming and profound. The panoramic views of Chiang Mai below are spectacular, making the visit visually stunning as well as culturally enriching. What makes Doi Suthep remarkable is how it blends architectural splendor, history, and spirituality into one place. It’s not just a tourist destination — it’s an experience that leaves you reflective, inspired, and grateful to have witnessed something so meaningful. A must-visit for anyone traveling to Chiang Mai.

We went up very early in the morning to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep to catch the sunrise, and the view was absolutely stunning. There were quite a number of people there as well, all quietly enjoying the beautiful moment as the sun rose over Chiang Mai. After sunrise, we walked around the temple grounds. The golden pagoda shone brilliantly as the sunlight reflected off it, creating a truly breathtaking sight. The atmosphere was calm and peaceful, and just being there made us feel a deep sense of serenity. Highly recommend visiting, especially early in the morning for the sunrise experience.

Tips for Visiting Temples & Culture

Dress Modestly

Cover shoulders and knees at all temples. Carry a light scarf or sarong — some temples lend wraps, but not all. Shoes come off before entering any building with a Buddha image.

Mind Your Feet

Never point your feet at a Buddha image or a monk — it's considered deeply disrespectful. When sitting inside a temple, tuck your feet behind you or to the side.

Ask Before Photographing

Exterior photos are almost always fine, but some interior halls prohibit photography. Look for signs, and never pose irreverently with Buddha images — it's a legal offense in Thailand.
