Sampaonava
Sampaonava sits along the Chao Phraya River in central Ayutthaya, offering a dining experience that pairs well-prepared Thai food with a warm riverside setting. The combination of scenic water views, relaxed but polished décor, and a kitchen that clearly takes its ingredients seriously has made this a popular stop for both travellers and locals alike. The menu leans into classic Thai cooking with a thoughtful touch — dishes are carefully prepared and attractively presented without feeling overly formal. Standout options noted by diners include shrimp cake crunchy salad, crab meat with string beans, and grilled river fish prepared in styles that feel distinctly local. The kitchen also works with ingredients of the day, so the menu carries a seasonal quality that rewards those who ask their server for recommendations. Service is attentive and staff are happy to guide diners through the options. Sampaonava opens every day of the week from 11:00 to 22:00, making it straightforward to fit into a sightseeing schedule around Ayutthaya's temple complexes. The restaurant is located on Thanon Uthong, a road that runs along the old city perimeter, putting it within easy reach of the main historical sites. Reservations do not appear to be required for lunch, though arriving early during peak visitor periods is a sensible precaution. The official website at sampaonava.com may provide further details on the current menu and any booking options.

Visitor Reviews
What a great restaurant on the river. Beautiful view and the food is fantastic. We ordered a bunch of dishes to share for 6 people. The shrimp cake crunchy salad, crab meat and string beans, and duck curry are great. And the restaurant has lots of vegetarian options. We went with the stir fried bumpkin and sweet basil and the gooseberry leaf and egg.
Sampaonava is a lovely restaurant by the Chao Phraya River in Ayutthaya — a perfect spot to enjoy delicious Thai food with a beautiful riverside view. The decoration and ambience are warm and relaxing, making it ideal for both family gatherings and casual meals. The dishes have a truly local Thai taste — flavorful, well-balanced, and clearly made with quality ingredients. I also love that the restaurant is pet-friendly, which makes it even more welcoming. The staff are attentive and full of hospitality, creating a great dining experience from start to finish. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Ayutthaya.
We had late lunch on Saturday at this river front restaurant, no reservation required. The service was great, the waitress recommended the dishes made from the ingradients of the day. We ordered from the recommended dishes in the menu, all of them are great, especially the chilli paste set. This place offers authentic royal Thai cuisine you cannot find easily in Bangkok. The open-air seats by the river look nice for dining, will try next time.

Learn the Spice Scale
Say 'mai pet' for no spice, 'pet nit noi' for a little spice, or 'pet mak' if you want it Thai-hot. Most cooks will default to a toned-down version for foreigners unless you specify otherwise.
Follow the Crowds
The busiest street stalls are almost always the best — high turnover means fresh ingredients and a recipe that locals vouch for. An empty restaurant at dinner time is a red flag.
Ice Is Safe
Factory-made tube or cylinder ice (used in virtually all restaurants and stalls) is made from purified water and is safe to consume. You don't need to skip the iced Thai tea.
