Sri Sai Mun Market
Sri Sai Mun Market is a working local market on Srivhiang Road in central Chiang Rai, catering primarily to residents doing their daily shopping. It offers a genuine, unpolished glimpse into everyday northern Thai life that stands apart from the city's more tourist-oriented night markets. Visitors can expect a compact, open-air setting stocked with fresh fruits and vegetables, dried goods, and household staples at notably cheap prices. Street food is available, and reviewers have highlighted southern Thai dishes — including an excellent kua kling — alongside roti and ginger tea as standout finds. The market is described as a typical Thai-style setup rather than a curated market experience, so expectations should be set accordingly: it is modest in size and selection can be patchy later in the day. A practical note for visitors: the market runs daily from 5am to 9pm, but arriving in the morning yields the best produce and the most activity. By mid-afternoon the stalls can be noticeably quiet and partially empty. Cash is essential, as card payments are not accepted by market vendors. For travellers staying in central Chiang Rai who want to shop alongside locals rather than tourists, Sri Sai Mun Market is a straightforward and accessible option.

Visitor Reviews
Everything you need under 1 roof. All cheap prices and very fresh produce
I would like to give Sri Sai Mun Market (ตลาดศรีทรายมูล) four stars because it is one of the most lively and authentic local markets in Chiang Rai. Visiting this market always feels refreshing, as it offers not only a wide range of products but also a true sense of community. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, with friendly vendors who smile and greet customers with kindness. Walking through the stalls, I can feel the energy and local charm that makes this market stand out. One of the strongest points of Sri Sai Mun Market is its variety. There is an abundance of fresh vegetables, fruits, herbs, and spices, most of which are grown locally. The quality is excellent, and the prices are very reasonable compared to larger supermarkets. It is a perfect place for anyone who values fresh, healthy ingredients. The meat and seafood section is also well-maintained, and it gives a lot of choices for cooking at home. Beyond groceries, the market also offers ready-to-eat local food, snacks, and desserts. I really enjoy tasting northern Thai delicacies here, as the flavor is authentic and cooked with care. The street food stalls bring out the rich culture of the area, and the prices are budget-friendly, making it easy to try many dishes at once. Another thing I appreciate is the sense of community around the market. It is not just about buying and selling; it is also about connecting with people. I often see families, students, and elders gathering here, which creates a lively and friendly environment. The only reason I rate it four stars instead of five is that the market can get a little crowded at peak times, and parking can sometimes be challenging. However, that is also a sign of how popular and loved this place is. Overall, Sri Sai Mun Market is an excellent place to shop, eat, and experience local life in Chiang Rai.
Basic Thai style market. Not very big to begin with, and about half empty when I visited at 3PM. But four stars in my book because they had curry-rice southern Thai dishes. The kua kling was excellent, perfect spices. Will be back for more southern food!

Haggle at Markets, Not Malls
Prices at market stalls are negotiable — start at 50–60% of the asking price and meet in the middle. Fixed-price shops and malls don't haggle. Smile and keep it friendly; aggressive bargaining is considered rude.
Arrive Early or Late
Vendors believe the first sale of the day is lucky — you'll often get a better deal if you arrive right when the market opens. Late in the evening, sellers may also discount to avoid packing unsold goods.
Be Cautious with Tailors
Bangkok has excellent tailors, but also many tourist traps. Avoid anyone offering suspiciously cheap suits or who approaches you on the street. Ask your hotel for recommendations, read reviews, and always get two fittings.
