Kad Suan Kaew
Chiang Mai's original mall, faded and cheap, and far more useful than the shiny ones up the road.

Nobody comes here for fashion any more. The crowds went to Maya and Central years ago, and what's left on Huay Kaew Road is a cavernous 1990s complex where the food courts are cheap, the clothing stalls are cheaper, and a man in a booth will fix your phone while you eat. I like it for exactly that. It's the mall Chiang Mai actually uses, not the one it puts in brochures.
Set your expectations right and you'll have a good time. Floors are big, half-empty in places, and the styling stopped somewhere around the millennium. If you want air conditioning, a bowl of something under a hundred baht, and a browse through everyday Thai shops without the polish tax, it delivers. If you're after brand-name shopping, skip it entirely and walk ten minutes up the road.
The location is the other reason to bother. You're between the northwest corner of the Old City and Nimman, so it's an easy walk from either, which is more than you can say for most shopping centres here.

Tips for Visiting Markets & Shopping
Arrive Early or Late
Vendors believe the first sale of the day is lucky — you'll often get a better deal if you arrive right when the market opens. Late in the evening, sellers may also discount to avoid packing unsold goods.
Be Cautious with Tailors
Bangkok has excellent tailors, but also many tourist traps. Avoid anyone offering suspiciously cheap suits or who approaches you on the street. Ask your hotel for recommendations, read reviews, and always get two fittings.
Claim Your VAT Refund
Spend 2,000+ THB at a single store displaying 'VAT Refund for Tourists' signs, get a yellow form at the register, and claim 7% VAT back at the airport. It adds up fast on bigger purchases.
