Phuket Elephant Conservation

5.0(848 reviews)

Set in the quieter Thalang district of northern Phuket, this non-profit conservation facility offers close encounters with rescued elephants in a welfare-focused environment. Unlike traditional tourist attractions, there are no performances, rides, or restraints — visitors instead observe elephants moving freely, learn about their behaviour, and interact with them through feeding and walking alongside them. Knowledgeable guides explain the differences between wild and domestic elephants and discuss the broader challenges facing elephant populations in Thailand. The atmosphere is educational and unhurried, with small groups and attentive staff who clearly prioritise the animals' wellbeing. Sessions run for approximately three hours, giving visitors genuine time with the elephants rather than a brief, transactional encounter. It is worth noting that bathing with elephants is not part of the experience here, reflecting the sanctuary's commitment to practices that benefit the animals rather than simply appeal to tourists. The facility is open every day from 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM, and morning visits are generally recommended for cooler temperatures and more active elephants. Comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing is advisable, as the environment is natural and often muddy. Booking in advance through the official website at phuketelephantconservation.org is strongly recommended, as sessions can fill quickly, particularly during peak travel periods. A small number of negative reviews exist, so prospective visitors are encouraged to read recent feedback and review the programme details before booking to ensure the experience aligns with their expectations.

Visitor Reviews

A brilliant visit to the conversation site. Melly our guide was brilliant, very knowledgeable and friendly with a great attitude. She carefully explained the key differences between wild and domesticated elephants. Unlike the recent review which I don’t think understood the difference, elephants like horses have been domesticated for centuries while there are also wild ones out in the jungle. Therefore these elephants can happily live in a more “human” environment without being poorly treated. This certainly feels ethical and not the same as visiting a drugged up tiger or camel rides in the desert. The elephants here simply do what they do - eat, sleep, bathe, and interact with humans. Anyway, the elephants are alert but relaxed and genuinely cared for by their carers who live with them 24/7. There’s no beating, sticks, riding, shouting or coercive behaviour. In fact one elephant, rescued from a circus, still does the odd little head dance or pose as it was previously conditioned to do it for food, but the guides don’t encourage it and the other elephants haven’t been trained to do the same. This place is a safe bet.

Currently on holiday here in Thailand, booked this for my daughters 21st birthday and what an amazing experience the staff super friendly and knowledgeable and the elephants WOW! Beautiful animals the paper making, feedings and bathing experience was really amazing and to top it off a cooking class at the end we were also give free drinks and food at the beginning and end and also a free poncho as it hammered it down. Well worth the money and the fact 30% of the money paid goes to the care of the elephants vet bills it’s a bonus. 100% book this experience.

Absolute fantastic time at the conservation, our resident expert Soma was absolutely fantastic with all the facts about these gentle giants, not a rope or chain in sight, the elephants where playful and hungry hahaha. This was one of our bucket lists and so happy we picked this place to tick this one off, would highly recommend visiting ..... you can also try thai cooking if you are one for that 😋 😍🙏🐘🐘

Tips for Visiting Activities & Tours

Vet Elephant Sanctuaries

Only visit sanctuaries that prohibit riding, use no chains or bullhooks, and let elephants roam freely. Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai set the standard. If a place offers painting shows or circus tricks, walk away.

Book Through Klook or GetYourGuide

These platforms offer instant confirmation, free cancellation on most activities, and prices that are often lower than walk-up rates. Compare with local agencies for multi-day trips where negotiation might save more.

Do Outdoor Activities in the Morning

Heat and humidity peak from noon to 3 PM. Schedule jungle treks, cycling tours, and outdoor cooking classes for early morning. Water activities are more flexible since you're in and out of the sea.
