Ao Thalane Pier
Nestled in Khao Thong village within Mueang Krabi District, this working pier serves as the main launching point for kayaking and boat tours through one of southern Thailand's most striking natural environments. The surrounding waterways wind through dense mangrove ecosystems and past towering limestone karst formations, drawing nature enthusiasts and photographers looking for an experience that feels genuinely removed from the busier tourist circuits. First-time kayakers regularly use this as their introduction to the sport, with guided tours typically running around two hours. The atmosphere at the pier is calm and unhurried, with a grounded, local character that sets it apart from more commercial departure points in the region. Tour operators cluster near the pier entrance, offering access to sea caves, emerald lagoons, and scenic rock formations along the waterways. Long-tail boats are also available for those seeking a more traditional way to explore the area, and the pier is a reliable spot for birdwatching and observing fish in the surrounding waters. Changing facilities are available on site. Good to know: Tides directly affect conditions on the water, and mid-tide visits generally offer the most accessible and enjoyable experience. Mornings tend to be quieter than afternoons. Booking directly at the pier is straightforward and often competitively priced, though arranging with an established kayak operator in advance provides more scheduling flexibility. Wear quick-dry clothing and bring sun protection, as exposure on the water is significant. Car parking is available at the pier for those combining this stop with ferry travel.

Visitor Reviews
Ao Thalane Pier offers a quietly compelling experience that feels refreshingly untouched by mass tourism. From the moment you arrive, the atmosphere is calm and grounded in nature—far removed from the commercialized chaos often associated with more famous piers in Krabi. What truly distinguishes Ao Thalane is its mangrove ecosystem, which is among the most pristine in southern Thailand. Kayaking through the narrow waterways is not merely a recreational activity; it is an immersive encounter with a living, breathing landscape. Towering limestone cliffs rise abruptly from the water, while dense mangrove roots weave intricate natural patterns below, creating a sense of quiet awe rather than spectacle. The pier itself is simple and functional, yet this modesty works in its favor. There are no unnecessary distractions—only local operators who know the tides, the routes, and the rhythms of the area with remarkable precision. Their familiarity with the environment adds a layer of authenticity and trust that is often missing in more commercial ports. Another subtle but memorable aspect is the soundscape: birds calling from the mangroves, water gently lapping against kayaks, and long stretches of near silence. It is an ideal destination for travelers who value reflection, slow travel, and ecological appreciation over checklist tourism. In summary, Ao Thalane Pier is not designed to impress at first glance—but it leaves a lasting impression. It is a place where nature takes the lead, and visitors are invited to observe rather than consume. For those seeking depth, serenity, and a genuine connection to Krabi’s coastal environment, Ao Thalane is quietly exceptional.
Really nice place to take a Ferry. The people in the blue Uniforms are really kind and helpful. You can park your car there if you take the Ferry. It's 100 Bath per night. We parked our car there for 7 days an everything was fine. No Problems. I recommend you, to call one of the numbers of the Pictures, if you want to know the schedule of the speedboats and ferrys
We came here with For Friends Kayak, which we highly recommend. They took us to this beautiful location, provided us with a scenic 2-hr tour, and took care of us. The pier is the Start/End point to board kayaks. Limestone cliffs, hidden beach, mangrove forests, and monkeys…just a few things that make Ao Thalene special.
Tips for Visiting Activities & Tours
Vet Elephant Sanctuaries
Only visit sanctuaries that prohibit riding, use no chains or bullhooks, and let elephants roam freely. Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai set the standard. If a place offers painting shows or circus tricks, walk away.
Book Through Klook or GetYourGuide
These platforms offer instant confirmation, free cancellation on most activities, and prices that are often lower than walk-up rates. Compare with local agencies for multi-day trips where negotiation might save more.
Do Outdoor Activities in the Morning
Heat and humidity peak from noon to 3 PM. Schedule jungle treks, cycling tours, and outdoor cooking classes for early morning. Water activities are more flexible since you're in and out of the sea.
