Khun Khan National Park

4.8(112 reviews)

Tucked into the Mae Sap area of Samoeng District, this lesser-known national park offers a genuine off-the-beaten-path experience for travellers willing to make the journey from Chiang Mai. The park's standout feature is its natural warm-water hot springs, fed by local springs and accessible year-round alongside a shallow, safe river that attracts families and casual visitors alike. A roughly 4-kilometre nature trail of simple to moderate difficulty follows the river, making it accessible to most fitness levels. The Mae Sap Cave is noted as one of the park's main attractions, and camping equipment is available to rent on-site at reasonable prices for those wanting to extend their stay overnight. The atmosphere is distinctly quiet and unhurried — visitor numbers are low, particularly among international travellers, which adds to its appeal for those seeking an authentic natural escape. Much of the surrounding land transitions into farmland and local settlement, giving the park an unpolished, lived-in character rather than a manicured tourist destination feel. Expectations for facilities and trail variety should be modest; the draw here is simplicity and seclusion rather than dramatic scenery or developed infrastructure. Good to know: The park is open daily from 08:30 to 16:30, with a low entrance fee. Allow sufficient time for the drive from Chiang Mai, which takes just over an hour by scooter. Wear comfortable footwear suitable for riverside walking, and bring water as facilities are basic. Check the park's Facebook page before visiting to confirm current access and conditions.

Visitor Reviews

I visited **Khun Khan National Park** on **11 January 2026**, and it turned out to be a wonderfully peaceful escape from Chiang Mai. The park is located just over an hour’s scooter ride from the city, making it an easy and rewarding day trip. The journey itself is pleasant, and upon arrival, the calm atmosphere immediately sets this national park apart from busier destinations in Northern Thailand. Unlike many national parks that emphasize dramatic mountain views, Khun Khan National Park offers a more subtle yet deeply soothing experience. The park is defined by its serenity and relaxed environment, making it ideal for visitors seeking quiet time in nature. The absence of crowds allows you to truly slow down, listen to the sounds of the forest, and appreciate the natural rhythms around you. One of the park’s most impressive features is its **diverse forest ecosystems**. Within a relatively compact area, the park protects riverine ecosystems, mixed deciduous forest, and semi-evergreen forest. Streams and small rivers wind through parts of the protected area, adding to the lush scenery and cooling atmosphere. Bamboo groves, tall trees, and dense vegetation create a rich and layered landscape that feels both vibrant and untouched. We completed a **nature trail of nearly 3 km**, clearly marked with **14 sign-post stations** along the route. The trail follows sections of the river and passes through different forest types, offering constant variation in scenery. It took us just over an hour to finish at a relaxed pace, and the trail was easy to follow, informative, and enjoyable without being physically demanding. Overall, Khun Khan National Park is definitely worth visiting if you want to admire nature, unwind, and escape the bustle of city life. It may not have dramatic peaks, but its tranquility, ecological diversity, and well-designed nature trail make it a hidden gem near Chiang Mai. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a calm, refreshing, and meaningful connection with Northern Thailand’s natural environment.

Extremely beautiful experience. Nice track of almost 4 km with simple/moderate difficulty. We were the only guests possibly because it’s a bit far away from Chiang Mai but definitely worth it if you are looking for a quit place. Combine with caves nearby and as nature lover your day will be perfect. People at park and cafe very friendly. Thank you

Quiet and unknown by foreigners. Warm water from local hot springs is available all year round. Camping equipments are available for rent at a cheap price. Small river or stream is shallow and safe, so kids can enjoy. Trekking path is 4.3 km long. Highly recommend for families.

Tips for Visiting Activities & Tours

Vet Elephant Sanctuaries

Only visit sanctuaries that prohibit riding, use no chains or bullhooks, and let elephants roam freely. Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai set the standard. If a place offers painting shows or circus tricks, walk away.

Book Through Klook or GetYourGuide

These platforms offer instant confirmation, free cancellation on most activities, and prices that are often lower than walk-up rates. Compare with local agencies for multi-day trips where negotiation might save more.

Do Outdoor Activities in the Morning

Heat and humidity peak from noon to 3 PM. Schedule jungle treks, cycling tours, and outdoor cooking classes for early morning. Water activities are more flexible since you're in and out of the sea.
