Grandma's Home Cooking School
Set on a farm in the Saraphi district south of Chiang Mai, Grandma's Home Cooking School offers immersive, hands-on classes in traditional Thai and Northern Thai (Lanna) cuisine. The family-run school draws consistent praise for its personable instructors — particularly Roger and San — who are noted for making the learning experience both informative and genuinely fun. Classes begin with an introduction to the herbs, spices, and fresh local ingredients central to Thai cooking before moving into hands-on preparation of multiple dishes. Both half-day and full-day class formats are available, with past participants frequently recommending the full-day option for a more complete experience. Dishes covered typically include curries, stir-fries, and paste-making, with the Northern Thai curriculum offering a regional focus less commonly found at other schools in the city. The farm setting adds a distinctive element, giving the experience a grounded, authentic quality rather than a purely tourist-facing feel. Good to know: The school operates seven days a week from 8:00 AM to 10:00 PM, offering flexibility for most travel itineraries. Because Saraphi sits outside central Chiang Mai, visitors should arrange transport in advance — a taxi or rideshare is the most straightforward option. Checking availability and booking ahead via the school's website at grandmascookingschool.com is advisable, particularly during peak travel periods. Comfortable clothing suitable for working around heat and ingredients is recommended.

Visitor Reviews
Had an awesome time at Grandma’s for the full day cooking course! We debated for a while about whether to do the full day or half day, but glad that we went for the full day in the end. The school is a lil ways out of the city, so better bang for your time, but the main reason was that I actually did want to learn how to make a bunch of the dishes that are only included in the full day. Make sure you check the menus on their website beforehand, because they vary by day of the week. Something that surprised me — this school is an OPERATION. There are like 6-7 cabanas of different sizes with multiple classes going on. I think they said they can handle like 300 people a day max. But individual classes are quite small and private. Ours only had 7 people. Our instructor, Levin, had us hype the whole day and kept us laughing, and very clearly knew his stuff. The course itself was really well-paced, and they do just enough prep for us (e.g. slicing the papaya for the salad) that we can save a bit of time but still learn the important bits. And honestly, I was kind of surprised at how good the food even I could make was. Everything was very fresh. We literally took eggs warm from the chicken’s bum.
This was so worth it! I did the Northern Thai (Lanna) cooking class, and Roger was the best teacher: funny and making the best silly jokes, informative and explaining each step of the cooking process. . He even taught me some Thai words. The organic garden tour was very nice, and they will show you all the ingredients you use. Every single dish was delicious, and there is so much preparation that makes you appreciate your food. You will have a lot of (delicious) food leftover that you can take home! The staff were also very kind, and thankyou to them for preparing all the ingredients. For the price, this is a must-try experience and the level of service and quality of everything is so good. Everything is the best, I can't find a single thing that was lacking. Lastly, please be warned, some of the activities are physically intensive, like making your own curry paste in a mortar and pestle, and grating coconuts. You should also know how to use a knife, as the pace was moderately fast. Best experience I've ever had in Thailand.
We loved our cooking class at Grandma’s Home Cooking School! Our instructor, Roger, was funny, informative, and a great teacher! All of the meals we made were fairly easy, but totally delicious. We appreciated that they gave us the recipes at the end, along with professional photos taken throughout the class (complementary too!). The farm and instruction space were beautiful too. The only negative was the pickup - our driver got lost and was late, but the school staff were very apologetic and made sure we still got to complete the full class. We would highly recommend adding this to your Chiang Mai itinerary!

Tips for Visiting Activities & Tours
Vet Elephant Sanctuaries
Only visit sanctuaries that prohibit riding, use no chains or bullhooks, and let elephants roam freely. Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai set the standard. If a place offers painting shows or circus tricks, walk away.
Book Through Klook or GetYourGuide
These platforms offer instant confirmation, free cancellation on most activities, and prices that are often lower than walk-up rates. Compare with local agencies for multi-day trips where negotiation might save more.
Do Outdoor Activities in the Morning
Heat and humidity peak from noon to 3 PM. Schedule jungle treks, cycling tours, and outdoor cooking classes for early morning. Water activities are more flexible since you're in and out of the sea.
