Elephant Freedom Project, Elephant Sanctuary Chiang Mai

4.9(561 reviews)

Set in the forested hills of Mae Wang district, roughly an hour from central Chiang Mai, the Elephant Freedom Project operates as a non-profit wildlife refuge dedicated to the rescue and ethical care of elephants. Unlike entertainment-focused venues, the sanctuary gives elephants space to roam freely in a natural environment, and visitor programs are designed around the animals' welfare rather than performance. The full-day tour is a particular standout, taking guests through hands-on activities including preparing elephant food, walking alongside the herd through the forest, and bathing the elephants — all within boundaries that respect natural behaviours. The atmosphere here is notably unhurried and educational. Mahouts and guides share the backstories of individual elephants, explain their dietary needs, and offer candid context about elephant welfare in Thailand. Visitors consistently remark on the evident bond between caretakers and the elephants in their care, and the forested setting makes for a genuinely immersive rather than staged experience. Good to know: The sanctuary operates daily from 8 AM to 10 PM, giving flexibility for both morning starts and afternoon arrivals, though the full-day program is widely regarded as the most rewarding option. Booking in advance through the official website is strongly recommended, as spaces are limited and program details, including current pricing, are listed there. Wear comfortable closed-toe shoes suitable for uneven forest terrain, and bring sun protection and a change of clothes if planning to join the elephant bathing activities.

Visitor Reviews

We had been looking forward to our day with the elephants for a very long time, and our time at The Elephant Freedom Project elephant sanctuary far surpassed our expectations! The sanctuary is absolutely beautiful, and we loved seeing how the staff truly seemed to care about the elephants. It was clear that they are well cared for. Our tour guide, Boo, was very kind and informative. He drove us around, taught us how to prepare food and vitamins for the elephants, took amazing pictures of us with the elephants throughout the day, and gave us an incredible experience. We loved that while this gave us very close encounters with the elephants, it was done around letting the elephants do as they pleased and us watching and learning from them. We loved learning more about these gentle giants and love the mission of The Elephant Freedom Project. It was so amazing getting to spend the day with the elephants, feeding them, walking with them, and watching them bathe. The sanctuary also provided a wonderful Thai lunch, which we really enjoyed. We would highly recommend the full day tour, as it gave us a lot of interaction with the elephants! We also loved seeing the beautiful waterfall nearby off the sanctuary grounds. This really was a highlight of our trip to Thailand and was the experience of a lifetime! We are so thankful for all of the pictures Boo and staff took so we can always remember our special time with the elephants!

Pick this tour!! Absolutely the best elephant organization we could have chosen amongst the maybe hundreds available in Chiang Mai. The full day tour was so immersive! Everything from chopping up sugar cane ourselves which we fed to the gentle giants, to hiking with them as they fed in the jungle, traditional Thai lunch served, even making supplement balls which we fed to them as well. There was also an excursion to the Mae Yen waterfall where we got to get soaked by the surging waters! My biggest highlight was the hike along the river with the elephants after lunch where we got to watch them play and splash in the water. Would give this 6 out of 5 stars if possible! Plus our guide Pat was hilarious, fun, and enthusiastic, and spoke excellent English so he could answer all my questions. I would do this again and recommend to any traveling friends of mine 💖🙌🏻

It was an Amazing experience that we will never forget! The elephants were calm, gentle giants! It was so much fun feeding and walking with them through the forest, also, bathing them was a blast! Our guide named Pat was informative and hilarious! We totally recommend this tour. The full day tour included door to door shuttle service pick up drop off, includes a delicious hot lunch… the best part, it was reasonable priced! It is a tour of a lifetime! We researched other tours they didn’t really let you interact with the elephants. This is a must do tour!

Tips for Visiting Activities & Tours

Vet Elephant Sanctuaries

Only visit sanctuaries that prohibit riding, use no chains or bullhooks, and let elephants roam freely. Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai set the standard. If a place offers painting shows or circus tricks, walk away.

Book Through Klook or GetYourGuide

These platforms offer instant confirmation, free cancellation on most activities, and prices that are often lower than walk-up rates. Compare with local agencies for multi-day trips where negotiation might save more.

Do Outdoor Activities in the Morning

Heat and humidity peak from noon to 3 PM. Schedule jungle treks, cycling tours, and outdoor cooking classes for early morning. Water activities are more flexible since you're in and out of the sea.
