Doi Suthep-Pui National Park
Perched above Chiang Mai city, Doi Suthep-Pui National Park draws visitors for its combination of natural scenery and cultural significance. The park is best known as the site of Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, a working Buddhist temple whose golden chedi and sweeping views over the city make it one of the region's most recognisable landmarks. Beyond the temple, the park encompasses dense forest, hiking trails, wildlife, and waterfalls, along with Bhubing Palace, the royal winter residence occasionally open to visitors. The atmosphere shifts depending on where you explore. The temple area tends to be lively with pilgrims and tourists, while the trails deeper into the park offer a quieter, more immersive experience in nature. The winding mountain road to the summit takes around 30 minutes from Chiang Mai city, and visitors have the option of joining an organised tour or arranging their own transport. Both day visits and evening tours are popular, with the illuminated temple offering a notably different experience after dark. The park is open daily from 08:30 to 16:30, so those planning a full day of hiking or multiple stops within the park should aim to arrive early. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended, as the temple involves a significant staircase climb and trails can be uneven. An entrance fee applies for the national park, though the amounts and collection points can vary, so it is worth confirming current fees before arrival.

Visitor Reviews
I joined a night tour to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, and it took about 30 minutes from Chiang Mai city. The road up the mountain is pretty winding, and our driver was very enthusiastic… so yeah, a little scary at times 😅 But once you arrive, it’s totally worth it. The golden stupa glowing at night looks unreal—almost dreamlike. The night sky feels so close that it’s hard to tell where the sky ends and Doi Suthep begins. Absolutely worth visiting. And the stunning night view of Chiang Mai? That’s a bonus you didn’t know you needed.
Doi Suthep is literally Chiangmai's must-visit spot. It lives up to the hype, and the night view is very cool. Exploring the temple grounds is also a great experience. Since getting up here takes a long time, I recommend booking a combined tour with Wat Pha Lat or Wat Umong if you're on a tight schedule. (If you plan to hike, avoid doing it when it's too dark.) Although you can't see the sunset directly, the sky is beautiful at that hour, so I recommend arriving around dusk to enjoy the view.
Doi Suthep–Pui National Park is absolutely beautiful. Great hiking trails and amazing waterfalls along the way. The park is very clean and well maintained. Highly recommended if you enjoy nature and hiking

Tips for Visiting Activities & Tours
Vet Elephant Sanctuaries
Only visit sanctuaries that prohibit riding, use no chains or bullhooks, and let elephants roam freely. Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai set the standard. If a place offers painting shows or circus tricks, walk away.
Book Through Klook or GetYourGuide
These platforms offer instant confirmation, free cancellation on most activities, and prices that are often lower than walk-up rates. Compare with local agencies for multi-day trips where negotiation might save more.
Do Outdoor Activities in the Morning
Heat and humidity peak from noon to 3 PM. Schedule jungle treks, cycling tours, and outdoor cooking classes for early morning. Water activities are more flexible since you're in and out of the sea.
