Chiang Mai Zoo Aquarium
Chiang Mai Zoo Aquarium sits on Huay Kaew Road at the base of Doi Suthep, combining a large zoo spread across hilly terrain with a standalone aquarium facility. The aquarium is the standout feature, housing two walk-under glass tunnels — one freshwater and one saltwater — that give visitors an immersive view of aquatic life. It is a practical choice for families or travellers who want to cover both terrestrial and marine animals in a single outing without crossing the city. The zoo grounds are expansive and hilly, so expect a fair amount of walking across outdoor pathways. The aquarium offers more than many visitors anticipate, though some find the variety of species limited relative to the entrance fee for foreign visitors. The overall atmosphere is relaxed and family-oriented, drawing a mix of locals and tourists. Animal activity and crowd levels tend to be more manageable earlier in the day. Good to know: because the zoo is built across elevated terrain, navigating it entirely on foot is tiring. Hop-on hop-off trams, vans, and golf cart rentals are available on-site and are worth factoring into your budget and planning. Arriving early makes the most of cooler temperatures and more active animals. Wear comfortable walking shoes and bring sun protection for the outdoor sections. Check current ticket prices before visiting, as separate entry fees may apply for the zoo and aquarium components.

Visitor Reviews
If you have kids, you have to go and you will enjoy this place. It is good to go early, because there are lots of things to see. You can rent golf carts for a few euros and make your life easier getting around. Food, drinks, ice cream, souvenirs, they have it all. Parking is spacious, there are enough slots for everyone. Bathrooms right in the park garage. The aquarium was exciting to see with the underwater tunnel. There is a winter garden also with minus 10 degrees. They provide winter jackets. Prices are fair for a whole family, no wait, no pre purchase necessary. Have fun! ;)
Very nice zoo, the problem is that the zoo is located on mountains and its really bad idea to do it by foot, take the hop-on hop-off ride, it worth it 😅 And the aquarium is very good, we really like it..!
A must go place if you love nature and the aquarium. The entry fee isn't high. You can take a van to visit the whole park or self drive service is available. Take your time there.
Tips for Visiting Activities & Tours
Vet Elephant Sanctuaries
Only visit sanctuaries that prohibit riding, use no chains or bullhooks, and let elephants roam freely. Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai set the standard. If a place offers painting shows or circus tricks, walk away.
Book Through Klook or GetYourGuide
These platforms offer instant confirmation, free cancellation on most activities, and prices that are often lower than walk-up rates. Compare with local agencies for multi-day trips where negotiation might save more.
Do Outdoor Activities in the Morning
Heat and humidity peak from noon to 3 PM. Schedule jungle treks, cycling tours, and outdoor cooking classes for early morning. Water activities are more flexible since you're in and out of the sea.
