Chaloemla 56 Bridge

4.5(84 reviews)

Built in 1909 and inaugurated by King Rama V to mark the 56th anniversary of his birthday — hence the name — Chaloemla 56 Bridge is one of Bangkok's older and more historically significant crossings. The bridge features four decorative metal elephant heads, a detail that reflects the royal symbolism of the era, and serves as a recognized point of interest along Phaya Thai Road in the Ratchathewi district. Beyond its historical character, the bridge functions as a practical transit point via its canal ferry dock on the Saen Saep Canal. Visitors can board water taxis heading toward landmarks such as the Golden Mount temple and Princes Palace, or travel in the opposite direction toward Bangkapi Mall, passing through central shopping areas including Platinum Fashion Mall. Fares are reported to be among Bangkok's most affordable, with a maximum of around 22 baht per journey. The surrounding area has a pleasant atmosphere suited to a short walk, and the bridge itself makes for an interesting stop for those curious about Bangkok's architectural and royal history. Travellers planning to use the canal boat service should note that schedules and frequency can vary, so arriving with some extra time is advisable. The location sits near major transport links, making it easy to combine with wider exploration of the Ratchathewi and Pathumwan areas.

Tips for Visiting Activities & Tours

Vet Elephant Sanctuaries

Only visit sanctuaries that prohibit riding, use no chains or bullhooks, and let elephants roam freely. Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai set the standard. If a place offers painting shows or circus tricks, walk away.

Book Through Klook or GetYourGuide

These platforms offer instant confirmation, free cancellation on most activities, and prices that are often lower than walk-up rates. Compare with local agencies for multi-day trips where negotiation might save more.

Do Outdoor Activities in the Morning

Heat and humidity peak from noon to 3 PM. Schedule jungle treks, cycling tours, and outdoor cooking classes for early morning. Water activities are more flexible since you're in and out of the sea.
