Art 'n' Design Samui

5.0(134 reviews)

Tucked away in the Bo Put area of Koh Samui, Art 'n' Design Samui is a quietly special shop that combines handmade women's clothing with a carefully selected range of books in English, German, and French. The clothing is crafted by the owner and her mother, drawing on generations of seamstressing tradition, and the pieces are entirely unique to the store — the kind of handmade garments that are genuinely difficult to find elsewhere on the island. Stepping inside feels like a retreat from the heat and the bustle of more tourist-heavy areas. The owners are known for being warm and personally attentive, helping visitors find pieces that suit their individual style and colouring. The combination of second-hand and new books alongside original handmade clothing gives the shop an eclectic, unhurried character that rewards browsing. It suits travellers who enjoy discovering independent local businesses over chain stores or market stalls. Good to know: Opening hours are not listed online, so it is worth stopping by or asking locally before making a special trip. The shop's location in the quieter northern part of the island means it pairs well with a visit to the Bo Put walking street or the nearby beachside cafes. Given the handmade nature of the clothing, those with specific sizing needs may appreciate the owner's hands-on approach to helping customers find the right fit.

What an absolute hidden gem! This lovely little store on Koh Samui completely stole my heart. They have an incredible selection of books in English, German, and French — both second-hand and new — plus the most beautiful hand-sewn clothes, summer dresses, kimonos, beach bags (see photo), hair accessories, and jewellery, bikini. Everything is made with so much love and care by a mother and her daughter. There's also a brand-new collection right now with organic materials., and they're always happy to give great recommendations for the island. You can really feel the passion behind every piece and every detail. If you're looking for a truly special shopping experience with authentic, kind-hearted people - this is the place to go. Don't miss it!

I absolutely love this shop! From the moment you walk in, you can feel its special atmosphere—a charming blend of carefully curated books and beautiful handmade clothing you won’t find anywhere else. Every item seems to carry its own little story. What truly makes this place exceptional are the incredibly kind owners. With their warm personalities, genuine interest, and clear passion for what they do, they turn every visit into something memorable. You instantly feel welcome and perfectly taken care of, whether you’re searching for your next favorite book or a uniquely crafted piece of clothing. A truly wonderful spot that shows just how magical small, independent shops can be. Highly recommended! 🌟📚👗

This shop is a little haven to step into out of the heat. We had a lovely experience chatting with couple who own this shop. The very charming female owner is from generations of seamstresses and she makes beautiful clothing for the store. The owners offered us a refreshing herbal drink while we shopped. The inner sanctum of the store is a bookshop with many good English and German books so if you run out of reading material this is the place. The Couple both also produce artwork for the store. A great experience highly recommend!

Tips for Visiting Temples & Culture

Dress Modestly

Cover shoulders and knees at all temples. Carry a light scarf or sarong — some temples lend wraps, but not all. Shoes come off before entering any building with a Buddha image.

Mind Your Feet

Never point your feet at a Buddha image or a monk — it's considered deeply disrespectful. When sitting inside a temple, tuck your feet behind you or to the side.

Ask Before Photographing

Exterior photos are almost always fine, but some interior halls prohibit photography. Look for signs, and never pose irreverently with Buddha images — it's a legal offense in Thailand.
