Wat Tham Mangkorn Thong

4.3(441 reviews)

Wat Tham Mangkorn Thong is a Buddhist cave temple built into the side of a limestone mountain in Kanchanaburi, offering a distinctly different experience from the region's more conventional temple sites. The complex is best known for two things: its atmospheric cave shrine, which extends deep into the rock face and is home to roosting bats, and a traditional "floating nun" demonstration, where a meditating nun appears to levitate on the surface of a pool — a spectacle that draws visitors from across the region. A small on-site museum adds further context to the temple's history and traditions. Getting to the upper levels of the complex requires climbing a steep staircase up the mountainside, but those who make the effort are rewarded with impressive views and a collection of statues and a stupa at the summit. The cave itself is expansive, though the interior can be muddy and uneven underfoot, with limited lighting in places. Visitors should wear shoes suitable for both climbing and cave exploration, as the terrain inside can be slippery. The floating nun demonstration carries an entry fee of 200 baht. Signage within the complex is largely in Thai, so English-speaking visitors may find navigation limited. Dogs roam the grounds and have been noted by some visitors as unpredictable, so caution is advised. The temple appears to be open throughout the day on Sundays, and visiting on a weekday may mean fewer crowds.

Visitor Reviews

This is a very nice temple, but it's not for the faint hearted as it's on the side of a mountain. A very steep staircase to climb. But different to most other temples I've visited. We went to make merit for my wife's dad, and she was very pleased with the experience. The monk was very warm, friendly and welcoming. We ate at one of the restaurants before driving home and the food was very good and reasonably priced. Overall, a nice afternoon.

Visited here in January '24. It's worth the very hard walk up to the very top of the complex for the statues, stupa and views.

When we visited there were not many visitors, the temple was beautiful, not much english. the cave looked large but we had no shoes so we didn't venture very far. Bats mud etc. Not sure if we could have taken our shoes, if we would have had them we would of liked to explore. The other picks are of the Khwae Noi river 3btraveler

Tips for Visiting Temples & Culture

Dress Modestly

Cover shoulders and knees at all temples. Carry a light scarf or sarong — some temples lend wraps, but not all. Shoes come off before entering any building with a Buddha image.

Mind Your Feet

Never point your feet at a Buddha image or a monk — it's considered deeply disrespectful. When sitting inside a temple, tuck your feet behind you or to the side.

Ask Before Photographing

Exterior photos are almost always fine, but some interior halls prohibit photography. Look for signs, and never pose irreverently with Buddha images — it's a legal offense in Thailand.
