Chong Kai Allied War Cemetery

4.4(153 reviews)

Chong Kai Allied War Cemetery is one of Kanchanaburi's most moving historical sites, dedicated to Allied prisoners of war who died during the construction of the Thai-Burma Death Railway in World War II. The cemetery holds the remains of approximately 1,400 British and 300 Dutch soldiers, exhumed after the war from burial sites along the railway line and reinterred here under the care of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. The international scope of those commemorated — with graves representing soldiers from across the world — gives the site a particular weight that resonates with visitors from many countries. The grounds are immaculately maintained, offering a quiet, contemplative atmosphere set apart from the busier tourist sites in Kanchanaburi. Rows of uniform headstones, each bearing a name and personal inscription where known, invite visitors to pause and reflect on the individual lives lost. The setting is peaceful rather than sombre in a heavy sense, with well-kept lawns and a dignified simplicity that honours those buried here. Chong Kai sits just across the river from Kanchanaburi town and is open every day from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM with no entrance fee. The site is most comfortably visited in the cooler morning hours, particularly between November and February when temperatures are more manageable. Visitors should dress respectfully and allow at least 30 to 45 minutes to walk the grounds thoughtfully. Combining this visit with the nearby Bridge over the River Kwai and the Thailand-Burma Railway Centre makes for a thorough and meaningful exploration of the region's wartime history.

Chong Kai Allied War Cemetery — also known as Chungkai War Cemetery — is one of the most significant WWII memorial sites in Kanchanaburi, Thailand. After World War II the remains of 1400 British and 300 Dutch were exhumed from alongside the Thai-Burma railway line and placed at this cemetery. This cemetery is cared for by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, and is one of two war graves located in Kanchanaburi. This site is well maintained and is a place of peaceful reflection. There is minimal shade here and no bathrooms.

This is a beautiful war cemetery, one of the many in this neighborhood of Kanchanaburi. There are gravestones from people from all over the world, and it definitely makes you think about all the history that happened here actually not very long ago. Recommended for a visit!

Tips for Visiting Temples & Culture

Dress Modestly

Cover shoulders and knees at all temples. Carry a light scarf or sarong — some temples lend wraps, but not all. Shoes come off before entering any building with a Buddha image.

Mind Your Feet

Never point your feet at a Buddha image or a monk — it's considered deeply disrespectful. When sitting inside a temple, tuck your feet behind you or to the side.

Ask Before Photographing

Exterior photos are almost always fine, but some interior halls prohibit photography. Look for signs, and never pose irreverently with Buddha images — it's a legal offense in Thailand.
