พิพิธภัณฑ์สงครามโลกครั้งที่ 2

4.9(45 reviews)

Tucked near the Rainforest Cafe in Tha Ma Kham, this intimate World War II museum stands as a powerful tribute to the prisoners of war who suffered and died during the construction of the infamous Burma-Thailand Railway. What makes this museum particularly remarkable is its personal connection to history — the owner is the granddaughter of a POW who perished in one of the wartime camps, lending the exhibits an authenticity and emotional depth that larger institutions rarely achieve. Visitors can expect a compact but well-curated collection of artefacts, photographs, and documents chronicling the brutality of the railway's construction and the experiences of those who were forced to build it. A notable highlight for international travellers is that exhibition materials are presented in English, making the history fully accessible to non-Thai speakers. The atmosphere is reflective and respectful, suited to those with a genuine interest in the human stories behind the Bridge on the River Kwai and the broader wartime history of the region. The museum is open every day of the week from 08:30 to 18:00, making it easy to incorporate into a broader itinerary exploring Kanchanaburi's WWII heritage sites. Visiting earlier in the day is advisable, as the quieter morning hours allow for more thoughtful engagement with the exhibits. No pricing information is listed, so visitors may wish to check the museum's Facebook page before arriving.

Visitor Reviews

Great museum. A lot of information about the history of the Birma Railway, and everything is in English. The owner of the museum is the granddaughter of a POW who died in one of the camps. Her father started the museum and now she is continuing it. I spent about two hours there. They have original objects used by the Japanese, like tools and weapons. Entrance is only 40 baht but you can make a donation to support the efforts. The owner told me it's open only for 25 days, less than a month.

A small but informative museum. Well worth a visit if you are interested in the history behind the bridges and the suffering that prisoners endured at the hands of their Japanese taskmasters.

Very nice small museum. Make sure to visit.

Tips for Visiting Temples & Culture

Dress Modestly

Cover shoulders and knees at all temples. Carry a light scarf or sarong — some temples lend wraps, but not all. Shoes come off before entering any building with a Buddha image.

Mind Your Feet

Never point your feet at a Buddha image or a monk — it's considered deeply disrespectful. When sitting inside a temple, tuck your feet behind you or to the side.

Ask Before Photographing

Exterior photos are almost always fine, but some interior halls prohibit photography. Look for signs, and never pose irreverently with Buddha images — it's a legal offense in Thailand.
