Wat Phra That Si Mueang Pong - white temple
Perched atop a hill approximately 16 kilometres from Chiang Mai city centre, Wat Phra That Si Mueang Pong — known locally as the White Temple — is a Buddhist place of worship that combines a modern white structure built around an ancient original. The temple sits within a park setting complete with a waterfall, and the surrounding valley scenery makes the journey itself a rewarding part of the experience. The scenic drive out from the city, popular by scooter or motorbike, adds to the appeal for those wanting to venture beyond the more visited urban temples. Visitors can reach the hilltop either by hiking a long flight of steep stairs flanked by greenery, or by taking a shared cab from the parking area for around 40 baht. Those who make the climb on foot are rewarded with views over the valley below, as well as a closer look at the beautifully landscaped approach to the temple itself. The white exterior is particularly striking when glimpsed from a distance against the surrounding hills. Good to know: there is no direct public transport to the site, so renting a scooter or hiring a vehicle from Chiang Mai is the most practical option. Visitors should dress modestly in line with Buddhist temple etiquette, covering shoulders and knees before entering any worship areas. Opening hours are not confirmed in advance, so an earlier arrival during daylight hours is advisable.

Visitor Reviews
If you're visiting Chiang Mai, Wat Phra That Si Mueang Pong — the White Temple — is an absolute must-visit! The journey begins with a challenging hike up a long trail of steep stairs, beautifully surrounded by lush trees and the calm of nature. Although the climb can be tough, the peaceful atmosphere and fresh mountain air make it an unforgettable experience. At the top, you're greeted by the magnificent White Temple — clean, gleaming, and sparkling under the sunlight like a hidden jewel. The temple’s beauty is simply breathtaking, and it’s even more rewarding after the effort it takes to reach it. From the temple grounds, the view over the mountains and forests is absolutely stunning, offering panoramic sights that are truly awe-inspiring. It’s a place to pause, breathe, and take it all in. Definitely worth every step of the climb. Highly recommended if you are visiting Chiang Mai!
Its a white temple. It is located outside of the changmai city. About 16 km around 30-40 min drive from the city. It’s advice to rend a scooty/bike. The drive is very scenic. Also once you purchase the ticket you get a free ride to the top of the hill. Try not to wear any shorts if you are planning to come. They have their dress code. Must cover the legs. Its for both male & female.
From the Veranda High Resorts, you could see this temple sticking out so beautifully from below. I was with a group of 4 and we hiked there from the resort and took the hidden path up a looong flight of stairs and it was exhausting, but so worth it. We were the only ones present and that made the experience so beautiful. I was able to say my prayers in quiet and peace.
Tips for Visiting Temples & Culture
Dress Modestly
Cover shoulders and knees at all temples. Carry a light scarf or sarong — some temples lend wraps, but not all. Shoes come off before entering any building with a Buddha image.
Mind Your Feet
Never point your feet at a Buddha image or a monk — it's considered deeply disrespectful. When sitting inside a temple, tuck your feet behind you or to the side.
Ask Before Photographing
Exterior photos are almost always fine, but some interior halls prohibit photography. Look for signs, and never pose irreverently with Buddha images — it's a legal offense in Thailand.
