Silver Temple Meditation Retreat Program
Wat Sri Suphan, known as the Silver Temple, stands as one of Chiang Mai's most visually striking sacred sites. Every surface of the ordination hall is covered in intricate embossed silverwork, creating an effect that visitors consistently describe as breathtaking — particularly as the light catches the metalwork at dusk and after dark, when the temple takes on an atmospheric, almost otherworldly glow. Beyond its appearance, the site operates a structured meditation retreat program open daily from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM, offering both beginners and experienced practitioners an opportunity to engage with Buddhist teaching and mindfulness practice in an authentic temple setting. The atmosphere is calm and contemplative, making it equally worthwhile whether visitors come for spiritual practice or to appreciate the temple's extraordinary artistry. The retreat side of the program focuses on practical meditation techniques alongside cultural and philosophical context, welcoming international visitors looking for genuine engagement rather than a passing sightseeing stop. One important practical note: women are not permitted to enter the main ordination hall, a religious tradition that several visitors highlight with respect while noting the temple exterior and surrounding grounds remain fully accessible. Evening is widely regarded as the best time to visit, when the silver details illuminate beautifully and crowds tend to be smaller. Check the temple's Facebook page before visiting to confirm current program schedules, session availability, and any registration requirements, as retreat offerings may vary throughout the year.

Visitor Reviews
Visiting the Silver Temple (Wat Sri Suphan) was truly breathtaking. The detailed silver craftsmanship shines beautifully and feels almost magical, especially in the light. The atmosphere is peaceful and spiritual, making the visit feel special and meaningful. A unique and unforgettable gem of Chiang Mai. It is a peaceful place where I experienced meditation and learned how to calm the mind.
The Silver Temple is especially beautiful at night — glowing, atmospheric, and very peaceful. Lighting a candle there felt quietly spiritual. The embossed silver details are fascinating, including unexpected touches like space invaders, electric guitars, and other pop-culture motifs. The surrounding night market adds to the atmosphere. Worth noting that women aren’t allowed inside the main hall, which may be disappointing for some. Overall, a memorable and unique place to visit.
I definitely recommend visiting. Note that unfortunately women are not allowed inside the Silver Temple, only men. Absolutely stunning details and craftsmanship. Go in the evening, there are not many tourists then and the place looks magical at dusk. Entrance only 50THB. We also tried the meditation tour which cost 99THB

Tips for Visiting Temples & Culture
Dress Modestly
Cover shoulders and knees at all temples. Carry a light scarf or sarong — some temples lend wraps, but not all. Shoes come off before entering any building with a Buddha image.
Mind Your Feet
Never point your feet at a Buddha image or a monk — it's considered deeply disrespectful. When sitting inside a temple, tuck your feet behind you or to the side.
Ask Before Photographing
Exterior photos are almost always fine, but some interior halls prohibit photography. Look for signs, and never pose irreverently with Buddha images — it's a legal offense in Thailand.
