Baan Ta-Koh-Rai
Tucked along the Asia Road in Tambon Khan Ham, this well-established restaurant has earned a devoted following among locals and visiting travellers alike for its honest, flavourful take on traditional Thai cuisine from the Upper Central region. The kitchen turns out dishes quickly, with attentive staff and a clean, no-frills setting that makes clear the focus here is squarely on the food itself. Diners should come with straightforward expectations: this is not a fancy restaurant, and that is precisely the point. The menu leans on regional specialties and local ingredients, delivering the kind of cooking that reflects how people in Ayutthaya actually eat. Service is fast, the atmosphere is casual and lively, and the mid-range pricing keeps it accessible for most budgets. A few practical things worth knowing before visiting: the phone-based menu currently lacks English translation, so travellers with limited Thai may want to come prepared with a translation app or ask staff for guidance. Some dishes are prepared with bone-in cuts, which is traditional but worth keeping in mind. The restaurant draws crowds, particularly on holidays and during weekend lunch hours, so arriving outside peak times or being prepared to wait a short while is advisable. Parking is available directly in front, making it a convenient stop for those exploring Ayutthaya by car.

Visitor Reviews
This is a very popular restaurant, so be prepared to queue for a little bit when you come around lunch peak time. Though it is 1000% worth it! It is not a fancy restaurant, at all. But the food, wow. It is one of the purest, most authentic restaurants that I have been to with so much flavor in their dishes. It is not for nothing that this restaurant was in the Michelin guide for multiple years already. The dishes are more expensive than elsewhere, but don't forget that the dishes are double size than elsewhere! When ordering 1 dish it can easily fit 2 persons. Don't make the same mistake as us as we ordered 3 dishes and it was absolutely too much. Luckily we could have it for takeaway to eat again in the evening. Recommended!!
Traditional Thai Food from the Upper Central Region – Absolutely Awesome! The food here is seriously impressive. It came out super fast, and there were plenty of staff on standby to take care of everything — very attentive service. We arrived around 11 AM, which was perfect since it wasn’t too busy yet. But after 12… yep, it gets packed! So come early if you can. I ordered all the recommended dishes and honestly, every single one was spot on. Delicious! Heads-up: The portions are quite generous, so if you’re coming with a small group, don’t over-order — you’ll be stuffed!
Nice Thai traditional food with local ingredients. Located on the Asia road. Easy parking in front of the restaurant. On holidays, there maybe a long queue, so be sure to save some time. The food is worth waiting. Juicy, yummy, and crispy. There are open-air and A/C zones to choose from.
Tips for Visiting Restaurants & Food
Learn the Spice Scale
Say 'mai pet' for no spice, 'pet nit noi' for a little spice, or 'pet mak' if you want it Thai-hot. Most cooks will default to a toned-down version for foreigners unless you specify otherwise.
Follow the Crowds
The busiest street stalls are almost always the best — high turnover means fresh ingredients and a recipe that locals vouch for. An empty restaurant at dinner time is a red flag.
Ice Is Safe
Factory-made tube or cylinder ice (used in virtually all restaurants and stalls) is made from purified water and is safe to consume. You don't need to skip the iced Thai tea.
