Kampun Gai Yang
A Michelin-selected restaurant holding recognition from 2022 through 2025, this Ayutthaya spot has earned a loyal following among locals and travellers alike for its vibrant atmosphere and extensive Isaan-inspired menu. While the name references gai yang (Thai grilled chicken), the kitchen goes well beyond that — somtum pla ra (fermented fish papaya salad), larb, beef dishes, spicy salads, and fried rice with fermented fish are among the standout items that keep diners returning. The lively, informal setting draws crowds, which speaks to its reputation as a genuinely popular local institution rather than a tourist-facing operation. Visitors can expect a large, energetic dining room with a menu that leans heavily on bold, fermented, and chilli-forward flavours characteristic of northeastern Thai cuisine. The grilled chicken and beef are consistently praised, and the somtum options are a highlight worth ordering. Mid-range pricing makes it accessible without compromising on quality or generosity of flavour. Good to know: the spice levels here are serious — those with a low tolerance for chilli should flag this when ordering or approach unfamiliar dishes with caution. The restaurant is located in a residential neighbourhood off the main tourist trail, so a map app is useful for finding it. As opening hours are not formally listed, visiting during standard Thai meal service times — around 11am to 2pm and 5pm to 9pm — is advisable. The restaurant can get busy, particularly on weekends, so arriving early in a service period helps avoid long waits.

Visitor Reviews
Nice and delicious food. We were there on a weekday, and there were a lot of people. Food serving didn't take too long. Salmon spicy salad was good and fresh. Beef sirloin was a bit well cooked but not chewy. So far, everything was fine. It was worth for money, good price.
Their chicken and beef are very good! However, try to avoid spicy food unless you are immune to chili
A must-visit somtum (papaya salad) Michelin selected 2022-2025 restaurant in Ayutthaya! My top favorite is the Somtum Pla Ra (fermented fish papaya salad), along with the fried rice with fermented fish and, of course, the restaurant’s signature grilled chicken—a dish you simply cannot miss. For international visitors, don’t worry—the menu comes with pictures, and if you don’t eat spicy food, you can always let the staff know. There are also plenty of options without fermented fish and without chili. And don’t forget to try their desserts—they’re just as delicious as the main dishes!
Tips for Visiting Restaurants & Food
Learn the Spice Scale
Say 'mai pet' for no spice, 'pet nit noi' for a little spice, or 'pet mak' if you want it Thai-hot. Most cooks will default to a toned-down version for foreigners unless you specify otherwise.
Follow the Crowds
The busiest street stalls are almost always the best — high turnover means fresh ingredients and a recipe that locals vouch for. An empty restaurant at dinner time is a red flag.
Ice Is Safe
Factory-made tube or cylinder ice (used in virtually all restaurants and stalls) is made from purified water and is safe to consume. You don't need to skip the iced Thai tea.
