Mae Fah Luang - Chiang Rai International Airport
Serving as the main gateway to Chiang Rai province and the wider northern Thailand region, this international airport handles both domestic and international routes in a setting that is noticeably smaller and calmer than major Thai hubs. Its compact scale works in travellers' favour — check-in and baggage drop tend to move quickly, and the overall atmosphere is unhurried compared to busier airports. Facilities on the public landside include coffee shops, restaurants, and car rental counters, with some regional decorative touches that reflect the character of northern Thailand. Past the departure gates, food and beverage options are more limited, with visitors noting roughly two outlets available airside. Shopping is modest throughout, so travellers looking for regional souvenirs or gifts are better served by visiting Chiang Rai city before heading to the airport. Restrooms are consistently noted as clean, and the airport is straightforward to navigate on both arrival and departure. Good to know: because the post-security area has significantly fewer amenities than the public zone, it is worth eating or grabbing a coffee before passing through the gate, particularly for those on longer onward journeys. The airport is a practical entry point for reaching Chiang Rai city, the Golden Triangle, and nearby border areas. Formal opening hours are not publicly listed, so checking the official Facebook page before travel is recommended for the most current operational information.

Visitor Reviews
29/October/2025 Departing from this airport to Bangkok. Check-in counter at Thai Airways was smooth. Airport is compact, I like. A few F&B at the airport public area and 2 F&B outlets inside the Gate boarding area. Toilets were clean. Air-con was adequate. We arrived by rented car.
A very quiet Airport through drop off baggage in 10 minutes Various restaurants and coffee shops this side 10 minutes through second security, but nothing the other side The good thing is, I checked in my bag all the way to the UK
Chiang Rai’s small international airport offers good facilities, including airport cafés, shops, clean restrooms, car rental services, and more.

Tips for Visiting Markets & Shopping
Haggle at Markets, Not Malls
Prices at market stalls are negotiable — start at 50–60% of the asking price and meet in the middle. Fixed-price shops and malls don't haggle. Smile and keep it friendly; aggressive bargaining is considered rude.
Arrive Early or Late
Vendors believe the first sale of the day is lucky — you'll often get a better deal if you arrive right when the market opens. Late in the evening, sellers may also discount to avoid packing unsold goods.
Be Cautious with Tailors
Bangkok has excellent tailors, but also many tourist traps. Avoid anyone offering suspiciously cheap suits or who approaches you on the street. Ask your hotel for recommendations, read reviews, and always get two fittings.
