Muang Rae Hotsprings
Muang Rae Hotsprings is a small, active geothermal site in the Mae Hong Son province where natural hot springs spout sulphurous water from the ground. The main draw is the geyser itself, which makes for an interesting and photogenic stop, along with the local tradition of cooking eggs in the boiling water — available on-site for around 25 baht for three eggs. The surrounding scenery is lush and characteristic of northern Thailand's countryside. Visitors should come with realistic expectations: this is a simple, rustic natural attraction rather than a developed spa or resort. The water temperature reaches 100°C and above, meaning full-body bathing is not possible or safe. There are one or two foot-soaking pools on site, though reviewers note these can contain algae. The overall experience is best described as a brief, authentic encounter with the region's geothermal activity rather than a dedicated wellness destination. Good to know: Muang Rae Hotsprings suits travellers already passing through the area rather than those making a dedicated trip. It is best treated as a short stop of 30 minutes or less. Specific opening hours are not readily available online, so it is worth checking locally in Pai town or with your accommodation before visiting. The cooler dry season months of November to February make the geothermal setting feel particularly atmospheric.

Visitor Reviews
Muang Rae Hot Springs is a small active geyser hot spring that spout water. Interesting to see once and worth a quick photo stop, but it’s not a place to spend a long time. Simple, local, and good for a short break on the drive.
Nice free hot spring that you can visit. Does not have much - hot water which people like to cook eggs in and there are 1-2 pools where you can soak your feet but it is full of algae. There is some sort of trough designed to let the water flow but i guess it isnt working that well. Overall not a bad spot to stop by but I wouldnt suggest making a whole trip out of it. Parking available and free.
Nice little stop if you’re nearby Muang Rae Hotsprings is a small but charming place. It’s not something I would plan a long trip around, but if you’re already in the area, it’s definitely worth a short visit. The setting is pleasant and natural, and it’s interesting to see the hot springs up close. A good place to stretch your legs, take a few photos, and enjoy something a bit different.
Tips for Visiting Activities & Tours
Vet Elephant Sanctuaries
Only visit sanctuaries that prohibit riding, use no chains or bullhooks, and let elephants roam freely. Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai set the standard. If a place offers painting shows or circus tricks, walk away.
Book Through Klook or GetYourGuide
These platforms offer instant confirmation, free cancellation on most activities, and prices that are often lower than walk-up rates. Compare with local agencies for multi-day trips where negotiation might save more.
Do Outdoor Activities in the Morning
Heat and humidity peak from noon to 3 PM. Schedule jungle treks, cycling tours, and outdoor cooking classes for early morning. Water activities are more flexible since you're in and out of the sea.
