Chiang Dao Wildlife Sanctuary
Nestled in the mountains of Chiang Mai province, Chiang Dao Wildlife Sanctuary is one of Thailand's most significant nature preserves, protecting dense jungle terrain that surrounds the country's third-highest peak. The sanctuary shelters endangered species and offers hikers the chance to pass through waterfalls, rice fields, and flower fields within a genuinely wild mountain landscape — a contrast to the more accessible highland destinations in the region. Visitors can expect rugged, immersive trails rather than a polished tourist experience. The sanctuary has a raw, protected character, and the scenery rewards those who come prepared. Hiking with a local guide is strongly recommended both for navigation and for making the most of the terrain. Note that conditions can affect access — trails and summit routes may close due to fire or environmental factors, so flexibility on the day is worth building into plans. The most important practical detail for anyone planning a visit: access requires prior authorisation and cannot simply be arranged on arrival. Entry passes, permits, and guided hikes must be reserved in advance. Arriving without a booking is likely to result in being turned away at the gate. Visitors should also budget for an entry fee, currently around 220 baht, and check the sanctuary's official Facebook page before travelling for the latest access conditions and booking information.

Visitor Reviews
It's definitely the most beautiful mountain area in Thailand. This is the 3rd highest summit in the country but that's a real mountain contrary to Doi Inthanon and Doi Phahompok that are big hills. It's full of peaks, cliffs, limestone rocks and the nature is wild and various. The views at the summits are imposing and majestic especially for sunset and sunrise. Unfortunately it is now almost impossible to visit due to restrictions by National Park. It is open only 4 months a year (November to February) and limited to 50-100p a day. The process to apply is also very complicated and almost impossible if you don't speak Thai. In addition, conditions of admission change every year. Hopefully there are also secret routes all around the mountains that allow enjoying Doi Chiang Dao without all these bureaucratic paperwork and conditions.
Great place, highly recommend. Went on a hike with a local tour guide and it was a nice one through the beautiful water falls, rice fields, flower fields etc
We thought that we could go to the top of the mountain BUT there was fire, so the mountain was closed. We did another hike on the same mountain range. Your entry pass is good for 1 day at both access of the park. So, I recommend renting a scooter and visit both areas in the same day.

Tips for Visiting Activities & Tours
Vet Elephant Sanctuaries
Only visit sanctuaries that prohibit riding, use no chains or bullhooks, and let elephants roam freely. Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai set the standard. If a place offers painting shows or circus tricks, walk away.
Book Through Klook or GetYourGuide
These platforms offer instant confirmation, free cancellation on most activities, and prices that are often lower than walk-up rates. Compare with local agencies for multi-day trips where negotiation might save more.
Do Outdoor Activities in the Morning
Heat and humidity peak from noon to 3 PM. Schedule jungle treks, cycling tours, and outdoor cooking classes for early morning. Water activities are more flexible since you're in and out of the sea.
